COMING FRIDAY

With the Hindu fasting days of ‘Nav-Durga’, deciding to join the Muslim fasting month of ‘Ramzan’, along with ‘Pitrapaksha’ , for us film buffs it means that the lean period gets leaner! Still, it does not dissuade the filmmakers from releasing as many as three new films in the form of Shona Urvashi’s SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX, Sunil Doshi’s HULLA and living legend Shyam Benegal’s WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR. Out of the three, one can only see HULLA making some mark at the ticket window . And that too because of producer Doshi’s trademark shoestring budget extended sitcom. WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR does look interesting but the publicity has left a lot to be desired, and will reflect on its performance. The last release of the week, SAAS BAHU AUR SENSEX, has little or no chances at the ticket window.

LAST FRIDAY

Checking out last Friday’s releases, Vikram Bhatt’s horror flick 1920 turned out to be the front runner with Amitabh Bachchan’s THE LAST LEAR doing well at select multiplexes. As was expected RU-BA-RU turned out to be a damp squib. Released at around 80 cinemas of Bombay city and suburbs by Big Pictures, the 6.5 crore 1920 had a fair start. Outside of Bombay the opening ranged from average to fair at many places and was also good at some centres. The film is expected to succeed and turn out to be the comeback vehicle of director Vikram Bhatt. On the other hand, Rituparno Ghosh’s Amitabh, Preity, Arjun and Shefali starrer, THE LAST LEAR, had a limited release (thru PVR Pictures Ltd) at 25 cinemas of Bombay city and suburbs. The opening in Bombay was dull and was the same almost everywhere but good at select multiplexes. Not much is expected from the movie commercially. At the most the film may attract a small fraction of the class audience in some cities. The third release, Percept Picture Company and Zee Motion Pictures’ RU-BA-RU, had a poor to weak start and is expected to have a disastrous fate at the ticket window.

A WEDNESDAY

Neeraj Pandey’s very topical Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher starrer, A WEDNESDAY, managed quite decent collections in its opening week. And that augurs well for filmmakers ready to experiment with hard-hitting cinema. All hopes of a turnaround for Balaji Motion Pictures Ltd.’s C KKOMPANY vanished totally in the second week as the film sank like an anchor, after a very ordinary first week.
