Bollywood box-office report of the week (August 20)

By Box Office Editor (Ansari)

(Note : This week’s collections are for six days, instead of the usual seven, due to the Independence Day holiday on August 15.)

COMING FRIDAY

Its going to be one crowded week this Friday with as many as four new films listed for release on 22nd August. The impressive line-up includes MAAN GAYE MUGHALL –E-AZAM, PHOONK, MUMBAI MERI JAAN and MY FRIEND GANESHA II. One feels that so many new releases, with the older ones still doing well, is akin to committing box-office harakiri, and so last minute postponement(s) are possible. Evaluating the chances, the front runners are likely to be MAAN GAYE MUGHALL –E-AZAM and PHOONK, thanks to the fans of the two genres, comedy and horror and also due to the fact that the two films have been extensively publicized.

LAST FRIDAY

The much touted battle between Yash Raj’s BACHNA AE HASEENO and EROS International’s GOD TUSSI GREAT HO turned out to be heavily in favour of the former. Released at 76 cinemas of Bombay city and suburbs thru Yash Raj Film Distributors, BACHNA AE HASEENO had an excellent start. Outside of Bombay the opening was very good in the big cities and good elsewhere. The Bipasha, Ranbir, Minissha and Deepika starrer will have an impressive first week. The performance is expected to be best in cities like Bombay, Pune, Delhi, Calcutta, Hyderabad and Bangalore in India, though in U.P., C.P. Berar, Rajasthan and Bihar, it will not be as encouraging. BACHNA AE HASEENO has started on a fairly decent note in the US grossing $322,431 but is below the mark in the UK with just £96,756. On the Other hand, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO, released at 85 cinemas of Bombay and suburbs thru EROS Multimedia Pvt. Ltd had a fair start. Outside of Bombay the opening was not up to the mark at many places. The film has also disappointed in the UK grossing a poor £51,800 and a very ordinary $121,432 from US. The trade is not very hopeful but feels that the Amitabh, Salman and Priyanka starrerr has good entertainment value and although its start is not very exciting, it has the merits to pick up by positive word of mouth (of the masses), if aided by extensive promotion.
