Singh is not the King
Singh is King Movie Review
What would you expect from a film whose story is derived from the title instead of the other way round? Well, since Akshaya Kumar is there I expected it to be a no brainer laugh riot. No brainer it is, but laugh riot it isn’t. The movie doesn’t have a script at all and the entire cast and crew looked confused about what they wanted to show to the audience. Sometimes it seems like a comedy, sometimes a movie with a message, but in the end it turns out to be a big joke on you.
The movie starts with Lucky Singh AKA King (of Australian underworld) being attacked on his birthday and Lucky played by Sonu Sood catching the killer by performing a gravity defying stunt. The scene is shifted to Punjab where Happy Singh (Akshaya) is making everyone’s life miserable by trying to help them. All the villagers decide to get rid of Happy by sending him on a mission to bring Lucky back to his home. Happy on his mission to bring lucky back meets Sonia (Katrina) and ends up becoming the new King. Entire movie is full of crap except only a couple of good scenes (which actually made me laugh) in the entire 2 hrs runtime. Most of the scenes don’t even make sense like why Puneet’s father resembled Mika (King’s brother), sudden change of heart of every character in the King’s gang, why Puneet surrenders so easily during the climax, well there are plenty such loopholes. The couple of scenes I liked were the one with “King ka khoon khaul raha hai.” and the one where paralysed king is used as a tray to pass things among people.
There is no story in the movie to talk about. The director should go on a sabbatical and learn some skills before trying his hands again in this trait. Akshaya Kumar should not be over confident and relook at what he is doing. Katrina Kaif is so beautiful that she I don’t care about her acting. Yashpal Sharma shouldn’t try such kind of stunts again; he is so good at playing bad guys that he should be doing more often than doing such silly stuff. I had great expectation from Neha Dhupia after watching her in Mithya and Ek Chalis ki Last Local, but she doesn’t seem to be serious about her career. Om Puri should retire, it’s better than doing such roles. It’s sad watching him in roles he has been playing lately like in Mere Baap Pahle Aap, Buddha Mar Gaya and now this one. None of the songs including the one with Snoop Dog sound good, actually I got irritated whenever any song was played. Not to mention all of these songs were forced into the script.
In the end, when it comes to making movies Script is King and not Singh, in this case there is no king only a bunch of Jokers (just talking about the joker in cards, don’t confuse with the brilliant act of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight). This movie does not deserve anything better than 4 out of 10, 2 points of these are for the two jokes, but I think 200 Rs is huge price to pay to watch just two jokes. It’s not a fair deal. If you are Akshaya Kumar’s fan don’t watch it because you will be disappointed and if you are not, you are anyways not going to watch it.

Smoker Joe Nice review,See u on FK after long time. Its really disspoointing movie
First of all i wud like to maintain that i m not anti akshay kumar..he truly deserves his success..he has worked hard for it..
But here r some points i wud like to say to all bollywood buffs….
1. i have felt that success has gone over his head..he is trying to lobby against SRK..it is clear that he has joined Mr. bachchan camp..(as u all know the famous SRK-Bachchan war)..he is making comments against SRK though indirectly…
2. spoofed SRK in SIK….which is not good….
3.Just because of 4-5 hits in a row dont make him king of bollywood..i agree that he is a superstar but certainly not a king….there is only one KING and it is KING KHAN..
etc..etc..
Reason—–SRK and Akshay started their carrer around same time whereas SRK became Superstar in early 90s i.e in his early years..akshay has achieved that after 16 years…just tell me how does he deserve the king status..? wat SRK has achieved in his 18 years and wat Akki has….tell me.
u can see the exact brand value by the way how many brands a actoe is endorsing and specially which brand….it is there in advertising world the real brand value of an actor is known..
Today SRK is far above of all ….For ur better knowledge SRK maDE 150 + crores only by advertisement…can u imagine…How much is 150 Crores…i wud like ask everbody who say that SRK Yash Raj aur Dharma ke bina kuch nahi hai….1 honest question to all of u…Yash Raj & Dharma r the biggest bannenr in bollywood…every actor and actress dream of working with them….Why do YRF & Dharma work only with SRK….WHY…WHY ?? why dont they sign another superstar…
we all know that 2007 was not good for YRF..only saving grace was CHAK DE INDIA…who was the hero–SRK…wat was the theme… (Hockey )Sports also women team…..i CDI was 1 of the biggest hit of 2007 ..it was in top 5….i challenge u…hai kisi me dum CHAK DE ko blockbuster hit banane na…..d answer is NO…only SRK can do this…
SRK ke paas 14 Filmfare hai…just imagine…
Madamme tusaauds me StaTUE….
Biggest superstar Acc to CNN in the world…..
he has more fan following than Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise combined.
aapne aaj tak SRK ka kisi ke saath affair suna hai….NO …he is loyal to his wife…
No smooch policy……(1 galti hui thi..Maya Memsaab me)…galti to insaan se hi hoti hai par agar insaan us galti ko sudhaar le to wahi sacha insaan hota hai…..
Akshay kumar had affair with shilpa shetty and ravveena tandon..bachchan with rekha…samlan ka pata nahi ktne se…aamir ka pata nahi ktne se…divirced his wife..married twice…
Bandra Bandstand pe PALATIAL BUNGLOW….so much muney..so much power…so much fame….aur kya chahiye….
successfull Production house…Best sense of humour in industry..he showed his strength when he formed his camp against bachchan…almost entire industry was with him……
bachachn apna respect kho chuke hain…….main 70s ke bachchan ka fan hoon….aaj bhi…..main 365 din lagataar DEEWAR dekh sakta hoon…..soch lo main kitna bada fan hoon bachchan ka…par aaj usne apna respect kho diya hai…cheap publicity cheap comments against fellow actor…
he didnt invited hid frnds in the wedding…mkoi mar nahi raha tha shadi me jane ke liye…par amit ji ko sharm aani chahiye thi….apne dost tak ko invite nahi kiya jo unke bure waqt me saath diya tha…unhone use invite kiya jo unhe abhi fayada pahucha sakte hain..ya jo abhishek ko fayada pahucha sakte hain…eg–RGV ko invite kiya unhone jinke saath wo 2-3 filme kiye hain bas,…kyun avishek k liye..yash ji aur karan ko invite kiya kyunki ye abhi ke biggest director hain…….
aur is wajah se controversy hui..aur unhe publicity mil gaya….jo wo chahte thje..
ab unhone naya formula khoja hai……Safed jhooth bolne ka…
sarkar raj bahut buri tarah pit gayi…iske bawjood media me bolte rahe sarkar raj bahit badi blockbuster hai….ant me chup ho gaye jab unhe laga public ko pata hai ki film pit gayi hai….Sarkar raj was self proclaimed hit..
abhi world tour pe hain…usme jhooth likhte rahte hain ki show house full tha…comlete sold out…jabki aadhi bhi seats bhari hui nahi hoti hai…….yahi dikhata hai ki amit ji kitne achhe human being hai…..
mujhe lagta hai amitabh aur srk ka comparison hi galat hai…….amit ji apna 2nd inning khel rahe hain…jabki srk apna 1st inning me hi hai…yain pe comparison galat hai….jo chij wo apne 40 saal ke career me achieve kiya hai wo wrk apne 18 saal me hi achieve katr liya….bachan ka downfall ho gaya tha…koi puchta nahi tha unhe,,…unhone kisi tarah apne ko fir waapas laya…aur jam gaye…fir se naam kama liya./…srk ka bhi waqt aane do…abhi to bahut time hai srk ke down fall me./….jab wo din aayega,…fir jab srk v 65 years old ho jayega….tab compare karna us waqt ka srk aur amitabh bachchan ka……tab sahi comparison hoga……
i hope ki ab sabhi logon ko samajh me aa gayi hogi baat…

Kumar,
Pehli baat to yeh ki tumse bada bewakoof nahi dekha jise aankhon par bhi vishwas nahi hai. Did u by chance see the pictures of UNFORGETTABLES tour posted here?? if not, i will suggets u go and check and show me one pic where the seats were half filled. That is the problem. Guys lie u lie so blatantly ki bolte hue bhi sharam nahi aati. When most of SRK fans have even admitted that UNFORGETTABLES tour is indeed a BLOCKBUSTER,i see no reason why u try to mislead people. Agar english parnhi nahi aati, to photo to dekh sakta ho. Go and see the pictures of the tour and then comment. OFcurse BIG B is greatest human being but by saying wrong things about the show when u dont have any knowledge or idea, u r making urself a laughing stock in front of all. And regarding SR, the movie was HIT and it clearly finds the place in 6 monthly BO report list. So stop feeling jealous and try to build sympathy of SRK by mentioning his limitations. Becuase we have never taken the support of those crutches because BIG B had a major major accident and he suffers from Asthama and Myasthania Gravis (disease of muscles) and SRK’s problem are nothing in front of this. So when we dont talk about them, why are u gaining sympathy for him?
Kumar,
If AKKi repeats himself, what has SRK been doing since his debut. Romancing and each time he is either after one’s gf or wife or fiance etc. What novelty?
Rajeev,
Excuse me???Who is superstar for 8 years continuously????Talk of continuous, not breaks….because that way, even we can count the BIG B’s successes og Baghban, B&B, Sarkar/SR, Waqt, Ek Rishta, Aankhen/Kaante etc etc…And his ruling years will further increase to may be beyond 25 yrs….
When SRK has had breaks in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2005,2006 and now 2008.(i can discount yr 2008 since it is not over yet, but not the rest years where had massive flops….)
Arun,
SRK had flops???? Cmon..
In his last 10-12 releases, except for Paheli, name one flop for SRK, dude. I hope u wont include kuch metha and yeh lamhe…sort of films.
For that matter name any once actor apart from SRK who has delivered with consistency?

the r jealous of SRK……..it is a fact….
jaa arun pahle kuch sikh le padhna samajhna fir aana….hahaha –poor guy…
FAISAL,
FLOPS OF SRK IN LAST 10-12 YRS…ANY REASON WHY YEH LAMHE SHOULD BE SPARED????
SWADES WAS FLOP, DON WAS FLOP, PAHELI WAS FLOP, ASOKA, YEH LAMHE… WAS…AND MIND U SRK DOES JUST 1-2 FILMS A YEAR, SO RATIO IS QUITE POOR COMPARED TO BIG B WHO USED TO DO 506 FILMS A YEAR AND ALL OF THEM USED TO BECOME HITS. THAT’S THE POWER OF SUPERSTAR. SRK DOES ONLY WITH SUCCESSFUL CAMPS AND PREFERS TO PLAY SAFE.
KUMAR,
THE POINT IS THAT U GUYS R FRUSTRATED THAT WHY AKSHAY IS DOING SO WELL, WHY HRITHIK AND AAMIR ARE DOING SO WELL…BECAUSE IN TODAY’S TIME, ALL 4 ACTORS ARE KINGS….UNLIKE BIG B’S TIME, WHERE HE WAS ALONE THE “SHAHENSHAH”. GOTIT??? JAO JA KE PEHLE AMITABH BACHCHAN KE BAARE MEIN PARHO, FIR ARGUE KARO.
arun is one of the biggest idiots this country has ever produced………….
and KUMAR is one of the sensible person in the world…….
and thats true……..its true

Bachchan success ratio at the end of 86 was about 70% now its down to 50%.
SRk ka success ratio to utna bhi nahi hai since he has not given continuous hits since his debut…How can he be thought of to even compare him with the legend, MR. BIG B.

Readers pick: Bollywood’s most over-rated
There’s a thin line between good and great. What may strike as effective might not necessarily be exceptional.
While some film stars are naturally charismatic and hopelessly fortunate to bag a top rating for every single achievement, others have a knack to blow their trumpet to the best of their abilities.
Does that really make them incomparable? We asked you to vote for Bollywood’s most over-rated actors. And the stinging response was reminiscent of Aamir Khan’s punchy one-liner in Rangeela: Apun public hai. Kisi ko bhi gira sakta hai [I am the public. I can reject anyone].
So, here they are, rediff.com readers, your selection of top ten over-rated heroes and heroines:
1. Shah Rukh Khan
He may saucily croon ‘I am the best’. An overwhelming majority, however, voted Shah Rukh Khan as Bollywood’s topmost over-rated actor.
Even though most agree his work in Swades and Chak De! India was competent, they feel the eloquent star’s has made a career out of playing Raj/ Rahul clones in mush after mush. And to add to the injury, won awards too!
Interestingly, SRK made light of this very sentiment in his recent blockbuster, Om Shanti Om.
Just as Amitabh Bachchan was getting ready for the Toronto edition of The Unforgettable World Tour in mid July, Bharat Jotwani met with the legend with the news that had to be delivered in person.
“I told him, Mr Bachchan, the Atlantic City concert is several weeks away but we have sold most of the tickets,” Jotwani remembers telling the icon. He was referring to over 12,000 tickets sold in less than a week for the August 9 show at the Boardwalk auditorium at Atlantic City. He also told the Big B that tickets for the Nassau Coliseum edition on August 15 were selling out briskly.
“When Mr Bachchan appears on the stage there will always be magic,” Jotwani, arguably the most reliable name in star-driven entertainment on the East Coast for over a decade, says.
“But when he is joined by his son Abhishek and daughter-in law Aishwarya there is going to be unprecedented magic. Add to this the music by the phenomenally popular composers Vishal and Shekhar who will sing half a dozen of their most popular songs from such films as Om Shanti Om. And we cannot overlook the entertainment value Preity Zinta will be bringing to the show.”
‘Bollywood is getting Hollywood kind of treatment in New York City’
The show has also gained by the presence of Rietesh Deshmukh and Madhuri Dixit Nene, he says. “People expect the best from these artists, and they surely will offer hours of entertainment,” he continues.
“But technically too the show should be outstanding. People are very careful in spending their money. Our tickets are more expensive than the Broadway shows (where the good seats go for $110) and it is a matter of personal challenge for me that my shows should be remembered for a long time.”
Tickets for the Unforgettable go from $50 to $500.
Even though most of the tickets for the two shows have been sold out, Jotwani proudly mentions how the billboard ads sponsored by HSBC, the key sponsors of the show, has started beaming at thousands of people at New York’s Times Square. “This is unprecedented,” he says. “We have the ad running continuously from August 1. Bollywood is getting Hollywood kind of treatment in New York City.”
Jotwani, who was profiled in The New Yorker magazine over six years ago (perhaps the only Indian showbiz to be featured in the weekly), has steadily built the reputation for bringing the best shows to New York and New Jersey arenas.
Stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Hritik Roshan, Salman Khan and Preity Zinta have repeatedly said that he ensures a classy milieu and superb technical backup. Singers Asha Bhosle and Sonu Nigam, and composer A R Rahman have also said that Jotwani labours for months on to make the New York area event many notches above the other venues.
The New York and New Jersey Unforgettable shows are presented by Bharat Jotwani’s Poojanka Entertainment and Victor Khubani.
Several years ago Jotwani created a sensation by presenting Shah Rukh Khan and other stars at the Boardwalk Hall in a show called Temptations
“Shah Rukh was so moved by the ovation, he kept on saying that he had never been more overwhelmed,” Jotwani says. “I am sure this time we will be able to exceed the very high bar we have set for the show. This one should be for history books.”
“There will be cutting-edge technology and world-class production,” says Jotwani, who has also organised shows at such prized venues as Airlines Arena, in the Meadowlands. “We are offering the iconic trademarks of Bollywood, show stopping song and dance numbers, lavish costumes, elaborate backdrops and hypnotic beats. Vishal and Shekhar are not mere composers in this show. They sing and they perform and they are bringing tremendous energy to the events.”
‘Not only wild, they’ll go very wild’
The New Yorker profile of Jotwani ran when he organised the Heartthrobs concert at the Continental Arena and brought in over 12,000 people to the venue to see Hritik Roshan and other stars perform.
The prestigious weekly caught up with him several days before the show opened.
‘The other day, Bharat Jotwani, dressed in black leather and carrying two cell phones, was standing on the fifteen-yard line in the Continental Airlines Arena, in the Meadowlands,’ the weekly wrote.
‘He was trying to imagine what the arena, which had been set up for an indoor football game between the New Jersey Gladiators and the New York Dragons, would look like once it was pulsing with lasers and suffused with fake smoke. ‘Not only wild, they’ll go very wild,’ he said, sounding more hopeful than sure.
But he has proved again and again that a fine tuned concert can make people more than very wild. And that is one of the reasons that while many other show organisers in the past decade have disappeared from the scene or are producing far less glamorous shows, he has stood tall and restless to produce something more memorable the next time.
‘One wonders if we can ever be able to beat The Unforgettable’
Money is only part of what keeps Jotwani in the business, he told The New Yorker. He has two mantras — challenge and glamour — he says.
Jotwani who calls himself “a detail-oriented man,” says that at every event he organises he sits in different seats so that he could give advice to ticket buyers.
“People for my shows come from many cities across the Northeast, from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and even Kentucky,” he says. “I should be able to tell them first hand what they are going to see — and how well they can see for the money they are paying.”
“People like to take home some great memories,” he says. “While every show I have produced has been memorable in one way or another, this one could be the ultimate, and one wonders if we can ever be able to beat The Unforgettable.”
Big B’s Unforgettable tour is a big, big hit in the US. There is no denying the fact. Wherever he and his troupe goes, people come in their thousands, spending money and time. At least a considerable amount of money. Ticket costs somewhere from US$ 150-US$ 600.
The admiration of the Indian community living abroad towards the Big B is not unknown. Their admiration for Aishwarya Rai is also great. The two get loudest applause whenever the two appear on the stage.
It must have been mere the star power of the Big B that when the power to the sound went out, people instead of complaining and throwing shoes or tomatoes as is the norm in India stood up and encouraged Amitabh Bachchan.
They all clapped in unison after realizing that the cut in sound power was not something planned by the organizers.
Amitabh Bachchan who must have gone through such incidents while performing in India or elsewhere and must be knowing how people angrily react in such situation has fallen in love with his audience.
The Big B while appreciating the people’s response says, “But let me compliment Houston for giving us the most electric and moving moment last night. It happened when I was on stage. In the middle of ‘Rang Barse’, the power to the sound went. No mike, no electronics from the keyboard, nothing. A nightmare situation for any performer and any concert. In a flash realizing the situation, the percussions and the drums who need no power, kept the beat going and every one from backstage ran on to the stage - Abhishek, Ritesh, Vishal, Shekhar, the dancers everyone and just kept clapping to the beat and dancing. And then..”
Sheena, daughter of veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, is nowadays travelling with the Bachchans for their world concert ‘Unforgettable’ - only to click photographs of the show and to compile them into a book.
Sheena is a professional photographer and has done assignments with personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Imran Khan, Naomi Campbell and Zakir Husain.
Amitabh regularly posts pictures of the event on his blog with detailed captions and says Sheena is not too happy with this.
“The demand for the photographs of the shows is increasing. I am compiling some more pictures. But this is not being received well by the photographer (Sheena) since she has been assigned to do a book on the tour. She feels all her work is going out to the world before time,” he posted on his blog site.
Big B is all praise for Sheena. He wrote on his blog: “The magnificence of the arena and the enthusiasm of the crowds are so beautifully captured by Sheena Sippy Kapoor, who has been assigned to do a book on the tour.”
Sheena is married to Shashi Kapoor’s son Kunal. Her family’s association with the Bachchan’s dates back to the time when her father had directed Amitabh in blockbuster ‘Sholay’.
Thereafter, even her brother Rohan Sippy teamed up with Abhishek in ‘Bluffmaster’.
Now, she is busy capturing the special moments of the family.
To this, Amitabh stated: “We are indeed such an integrated fraternity and proud of it.”

Chopra said he will start his next film - “Pocket Maar” - with Amitabh Bachchan in October. The film is a family drama which will depict that crime, no matter how big or small, is a sin.
“Bachchan plays part of the family that is affected by the Pocket Maar. Rest of the cast is being finalised,” he said.
Chopra said B R Films has ventured into production on a big scale after several years with a slew of films in pre-production and production stages.
arun no one is reading ur big comments……….dont waste ur time…….
its not for u stupid fool, amair baig….u will not be able to understand anyways as^^%le
In 1992, SrK delivers his first hit Deewana. following it up with Baazigar and Darr in 1993 … and Boooom! he’s a star. well who wouldn’t be. Specially in the dry 90’s when a single hit were enough to keep you afloat for a decade. Check out the careers of Saif, Akshay, Anil Kapoor etc. They’ve had lean phases of 10, 15 even 20 straight films without a single hit… or having had 5-6 years delivering series of flops one after another. So yes.. the troika of hits were enough to propel any lallu panju into stardom in those 90’s.. why not SrK? Not to mention there were a couple of other mild successes as well amongst them mentioned there.
In 1973, Amitabh delivered his first hit after a string of flops to start off his career in Bollywood. With Zanjeer he was a star. And then he was there in Khanna’s hit Namak Haraam, was there in Manoj Kumar blockbuster Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.. and actually had a couple of modest hits of himself as well in Abhimaan and Majboor. Though nothing spectacular simply because the others stars at the times were delivering hits in hoardes tis the 70’s we talking . To begin with, a certain Rishi Kapoor delivered a blockbuster in Bobby.. That Dharam guy delivered 10 hits between 72-74. And ofcourse the reigning star of the time Rajesh Khanna had slowed down but not done. And so on and so forth. This is very much different from SrK, for whom one could actually make a sincere case for having as good as a BO record as anyone else had 92-95.. or heck expand it to 90-95. But let’s leave that aside, that ain’t the purpose of this post. Let’s just say that Amitabh became as big a star in 1973.
In 1995, SrK takes hold of the top reigns of Bollywood superstardom with two blockbusters in one year in Karan Arun and DDLJ the latter being the longest running Bollywood movie. A number of reasons account for him being able to grab the numero uno position including the imprisonment of Dutt, some bad movie choices on the part of other rivals (e.g. Anil Kapoor with Roop Ki Rani.. , Sunny Deol with Darr..etc) but it was also the momentum he carried on with his earlier hits in 92-93 and then KA, DDLJ that propelled him to the that top spot. And though he kind of stumbled in 96, he widened the gap back between him and his rivals with string of hits in 97 and 98. From there on he got the better of or atleast matched upto whatever the other stars tried to throw at him. And then there was this amazing phase post-K3G in 2001 all the way to 2005, where he had all the biggest initials, almoste every movie a hit/superhit and infact delivered more hits than the rest of the industry’s top stars’ hits combined. His closest rival Hrithik had delivered one hit between 2000 and 2006. Another one Sunny delivered 6 back-to-back flops and distasters after the twin-hits in 2001. Aamir had a grand total of one clean hit between 97 and 2006. And Salman..? well. he held his own upto 99.. but lost steam thereafter and now is now very much a washed-up case. While Govinda decimated long ago. Forget about having a consistent rival, he rarely had any type of a competition unil 2006. “Only SrK and Sells” , they said.
By 1978.. Amitabh was the undisputed superstar of Bollywood. Though he had delivered a Deewar in 1975.. as well as Sholay, some, well let’s say a few, were still holding their verdict as Dharam had been piling on big hits (more than a dozen of them) through 73-77.. Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baraat, Loafer, Pratigya, Dharam Veer, Chacha Bhatija, CC, Charas etc.. and even the biggest hit of 75 - Sholay, had Dharam in a meatier role, implying in a way as him being the main lead. Also.. Manoj Kumar was in full force delivering a monster hit in RKUM, then follwing it with Sanyasi and Dus Numbri. However the momentun carried by Deewar, strengthened by AAA, MKS, Don and Trishul not only tilted the balance in his favour but widened the gap between him and the rest big time. And through the late 70’s and early 80’s, the likes of Dharam, Vinod Khanna and Jeetendra delivered some significant hits but unable to match Bachchan’s amazing run 78-82 when the term “one-man-industry” was coined for him.
16 years later.. where does SrK stand? 16 years after delivering his first hit and rising to stardom and 13 years since he captured the top reigns - the superstardom… what’s his position now? Lat time I checked he had two blockbusters in one year, had his fourth consecutive success in OSO, and recaptured the biggest initial record again… for the 5th time in past 6 years.. after holding it intact for 215 weeks (amongst 5 movies) that amonuts to more than 4 years during that time period. They say opening records break every week nowadays.. well.. 70% of the time it stays with him. Even if one claims that he’s not outdelivering the other guys, well he’s certainly keeping up with them. Tackling each one at a time. If Hrithik delivered a Dhoom2 with YRF and riding on a successful franchise, he delivered an equally big one OSO under his own production. If Aamir threw a RDB and Fanaa at him, he responded with a hit in Don and a blockbuster in CDI. If Akshay can boast of 4 back-to-back hits, then SrK can boast of 4 back-to-back Bigger hits. And not to mention the versitality… the different genres and the diferent types of roles he played in them, the overseas and what not. 9 out of his last 11 films have been a success including 2 blockbusters and 2 superhits. His last hit-less year? 2005 when he only had one small release Paheli. His last bad year… the last time he had a dissapointing year when he couldn’t deliver a hit inspite of major release? 1999 which was 8 years ago. Again a year with only one realease. The last time he had a year with multiple releases and no major hit? 1996 that’s almost 12 freaking years ago. yes.. he’s still the numero Uno even if teh competition’s got tougher and rivals are closer to him than ever before.
By 1989-90, 16 years after his Zanjeer and 13 years after his Deewar, and 11 years after being reocgnized as the undisputed top star at the box office, where did Amitabh stand in 1989? Well..let’s see.. Amitabh didn’t have a single clean hit post-Mard in 85 and his next hit was Aaj Ka Arjun in 90. Can you beleive that? 5 years without a single hit? 5 freaking years? inpite of starring in some huge films like Aakhree Raasta, Shahenshah, Jaadugar(Parkash Mehra), Toofan (Ketan Desai), Agneepath, etc.. What about the other stars? Well.. all had their share of hits and more success than Amitabh at the time.. with Anil Kapoor at the lead with three consecutive years starring in the year’s bigget hit - Karma (86), Tezaab (87) and Mr. India (88) and following it up with the 2nd biggest hit of the year Ram Lakhan in 89. And not only Anil and the newer generation of stars, Amitabh’s old rivals like Dharam and Jeetendra had significantly better run than Amitabh during that 5-year haul. Even Dilip Kumar had a few superhits including some huge ones during that period? One is tempted to ask the question - Was Amitabh really a top a star by the end of 1989? Did he even held a spot in the top bracket inspite of no hit in 5 years? How does his position in 1990, compare to SrK’s position today? We may not know what the future holds for SrK.. but we do know that 16 years after delivering their first hit and 13 years after making it to to the top, Srk is in a much more stronger position today, than what Amitabh was at the exact same point in his own career. Don’t they say, it’s not that hard to make it to the top, it’s much much harder to stay there once you get there.
hey,. the purpose of this exercise is not to claim that SrK had an overall stronger hold on the Box office, or that he’s had more illustrous a career… but simply that Amitabh’s reign at the Numero Uno position was either a very weak one.. or to put it more bluntly had been given up by the end of 16 years.
Now one would ask why SrK and Bachchan? well.. Bollywood has had liek what.. 4 superstars throughout its history - Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh and Srk… (and 6 if u include Rajendra kumar and KL Saigal..)
NOw.. when Dilip was around (and teh guys before him) the tag “superstar” had not yet been coined. and notbody really referred to Dilip or Rajendra Kumar as superstars in their hey day. Khanna was the first superstar .. and there was every reason why he was called that. Coz he was not simply the top star.. but there was this 4-5 year period when there was no competitionwhatsoever..a nd he was a phenomenon of sorts at the Box office.. and everything he touched either became a hit, superhit or a blockbuster. No star, prior to him, or after him, had gone through such amazingly fruitful a period. Now Amitabh.. is considered by media (and audiences) as the medgastar of a ll-time.. and though he never matched Khanna’s supersucess period, he did however beat others on mere longetivity AT THE TOP. Remember.. Dilip Kumar did have quite long a period as well..a nd infact delivered his last hit as late as in 1992. .. a whole 45 years after he emerged a star… and consistently delivered hits whenever he had releases.. in the 40’s, the 50’s , 60’s 70’s 80’s and one in the 90’s. That’s what you call longetivity.. but tehn he was never a top star during that whole period after his first innings.. yes he did deliver hits in the 70’s and 80’s.. but he was not teh top star of that era. With Bachchan, most claim (somewhat rightly so) that he’s been the top star from 76 all the way to 92 when he retired. The purpose of teh above post is to shed some light on that notion, and to prove that it was n exactly so.. and AMitabh wasn’t really much of a top star after 83-83 .. he never recovered from that accident.
People talk about Rational but this forum is filled with fools .………There are N no. of statistics filled in various websites and people and i dont give a s%@t…….
Inspite of my telling that Amitabh has worked with many types of directors and not only worked keeping box office in view unlike SRK who does a movie keeping only boxoffice in view…..
You guys at random choose 40-50 movies of amitabh and make all sorts of bullcrap stastistics and try to convince yourself but inreality you are prooving yoursel as biggest dumb in this forum……..
Even a layman knows that SRK is basically working with only selected banners and production houses keeping boxofice in his mind……..That was never the case wth amitabh……He acted with everytype of directors in all eras……….
You are comparing a guy who did just 47 movies to a person who did approx. 180 movies……that itself shows that amitabh has capability to work in every GENRE of movies that no other superstar ever did in the history of Indian cinema……there ae many genres which may not work at boxoffice but one should be talented to do that and thats what is the case with amitabh………
In 70s time was different, people were different, tastes were diferent…….Today time is different , people are different , tastes ae different…….But one thing is common…..Do you know what???
Amitabh !!!!……He was popular in masses and classes in 70s and he is still popular in masses and classes…….and thats what I call as “TRUE SUPERSTAR”…….SRK doesnt have that versatality to even survive in his 60s as a star (forget about actor)…….
At the age of 66 amitabh can win best actor award in populars poll as well as critics poll……..Now thats what I call a” true superstar and an super-actor”……Its so insulting that people even take the name od SRK with amitabh….
Blind people have their own defnition but rational people have their own…Fortunately the no. of rational people are more in this world!!!
I wonder why Devdas is taken as a parameter for judging best actor. SRK used to drink for his scenes in Devdas while AB who has done many drunken scenes with perfection never resorted to drinking. See Naseeb. Does SRk has the intensity to give one shot of Sarkar/SARKAR RAJ with the same dignity with which AB did the whole movie? Can he Play the character of Abhimaan, Majbur, Saudagar, Black, Kala Pathar, Deewar, Hum and many more?? The intensity and seriousness which Ab brings onscreen is gripping and that’s why he is legend.
NIshabd, Eklavya and Cheeni kum are the creative work of that AB who doesn’t rely on box-office results to prove his mettle. He wants to satisfy the actor in himself and he is free to do it. Whereas SRK has to go through that phase when he would be in dilemma (thephase every actor goes through, the phase when lover boy image has to be transformed in to Daddy image). Thats where even AB gave many flops coupled with his financial crisis. Moreover, AB’s age factor is a hindrance in providing series of hits so even if he gives one or two hits after an interval it’s a bonus.
Yes i agree nowadays sensible movies are made…and still most of them flop but in Amitabhs era people were so obsessed with him that directors and producers used to sign him for anything they wanted to make, senseless or sensible and many of such hopeless movies were superhits.
When SRK entered bollywood there was no reigning superstar, AB had retired by then for few years. but, when AB entered Rajesh Khanna was reigning along with Dharmendra.

“Encore…Encore!” were the shouts from the crowd when Bollywood stars stood together to take a bow at the end of the first concert of ‘The Unforgettables’ tour in Toronto.
Such was the euphoria of the audience at the Roger Centre on Friday night. It was an evening filled with song, dance and dialogues by top Bollywood stars including Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek Bachchan , Aishwarya Rai , Akshay Kumar , Preity Zinta and Ritesh Deshmukh .
Big B, the senior-most in the troupe, was also the most versatile on stage. Not only did he perform to his popular songs from ‘Yaarana’, Don (1978) and Silsila , he also regaled the crowd by reciting famous dialogues from his several movies.
Abhishek and Aishwarya jammed up with senior Bachchan on ‘Kajra Re’. Ash, Abhi and Preity also paid a tribute to Big B by performing to a medley of his songs.
Akshay Kumar sent the girls swooning with his charged-up performance to songs from Singh Is Kinng . The superstar also called a girl on stage to dance with him. The lucky girl had an expression of disbelief on her face as she shook her leg with the most successful star of Bollywood since the last one and half years.
Overall, the show lived up to its name and it was truly a memorable experience for the people of Toronto.
The American leg of the tour will have Madhuri Dixit joining the troupe. Shilpa Shetty would join for concert in the UK.

Big B stuns Indians across Caribbean
Since Trinidad was the only Caribbean stop for Big B, Indians flew in here for Sunday’s show by chartered planes from Suriname, Guyana and Jamaica
Port of Spain: Indians from all over the Caribbean flocked to the Queen’s Park Oval here to watch Amitabh Bachchan, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya dance to the tunes of their hit songs as part of their Unforgettable Tour.
Trinidad was the second leg of the tour which kicked off in Toronto, Canada, July 18. Since Trinidad was the only Caribbean stop, Indians flew in here for Sunday’s show by chartered planes from Suriname, Guyana and Jamaica.
After a short delay caused by an electrical outage, the show was put on the road by the Caribbean’s noted master of ceremonies Shamoon Mohammed. Seventeen-year-old Shivanna Ragoonanan held the audience’s attention with her renditions of both Trinidad and India’s national anthems on the steel pan.
After that there was no looking back as Preity Zinta and Akshay Kumar prepared the crowd for an enthusiastic song and dance extravaganza with their brilliant performances. Preity set the tone with a couple of scintillating renditions, including “Pretty Woman” from her film “Kal Ho Na Ho.” Large screens had been put up at the Oval to ensure everyone was able to see their favourite stars perform.
Riteish Deshmukh and Vishal Shekhar took over from Preity and Akshay. Then Abhishek was on the frontline, interacting with the crowd, which included former prime minister Basdeo Panday, MP Kamla Persad Bissessar, cultural activist Ajeet Praimsingh and acting director of the Gandhi Cultural Centre Shantosh Misra.
Abhishek recalled that he had come to Trinidad 25 years ago with his father and had a very memorable stay. He thrilled the audience with his electrifying performance of songs from “Dus” and “Bunty Aur Babli.”
Aishwarya Rai got a standing ovation as she took to the stage. She came. She saw. She conquered. She sang and danced, ably supported by her cast on stage and from the audience. The former Miss World was dynamic, thrilling and decisive. She knew what the audience wanted and came prepared to deliver it.
The audience jumped to their feet when Big B took control of the show. Some danced while others sang along as he performed several hits, including “Rang Barse” and “Pichkaree.”
It was truly Amitabh’s show. His mesmeric presence on the stage would continue to linger in the hearts and minds of all those who came to see him performs.
Indian entertainers are very popular among the 500,000 people of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago. As soon as the dates of shows by Indian performers are announced, the tickets get sold out.
For the Unforgettable Tour, VVIP tickets were sold at $400, VIP ones for $250, special reserve tickets at $160, reserved area tickets at $90 and general admission for $50.
Since 1964, Indian musicians, dancers and singers have been performing here and this is viewed by cultural thinkers and sociologists as an in-depth initiative to fully re-link with the Indian diaspora who came here mainly from two Indian states - Uttar Pradesh and Bihar - between 1845 and 1917 to work in farms.
Smoker joe You Don”t have Brain, thats why You Dont understand this film, Any way KUMAR IS KING
OFCOURSE KUMAR IS KING….KING KUMAR…
Yesterday ..there was a opinion poll in HEADLINES TODAY and AAJTAK. The question was WHO IS THE KING OF BOLYYWOOD.The response from the public was 1.SRK: 53.11 % 2.Akshya: 33.43% 3.Aamir:4.44% 4.HR :4.13% 5.None of them: 5.23% So in the midst of all hype surrounding SIK…KING KHAN still rules th
Details
amitab is not even in top 6 even hr has beaten up amitab poor amitab
Pretty soon, ARun will be saying ABhishek is king, and bigger that SRK.
I meant bigger than SRK
Arun said SRK is not the only king. That means he accepts the fact the SRK is King.
Comon people,
OSO had saawariya to compete, whereas SIK had none. That says, “OSO without saawaiya, and with lesser no.. of prints then SIK” would have fetched not lesser than 45-50 crores in first week itself. So anytime OSO is bigger than SIK.
And the king Khan should never be compared with Akki since the later is a good comedian actor, and SRK is the legend of Bollywood.
Wat say u guys??
raja,
I have mentioned that SRK is king but not alone no. of times. If u cant understand my english, then i cant help it….That’s why i have said that Amitabh is far far above all since he was the only one who enjoyed the superstar status ALONE….
Arun,
If Don was a flop, then u r really out of our senses. And Swades a critaclly acclaimed movie for which he got a filmfare too. Now dont say he buyed it. lol
And yeh lamhe was shot way back, it was just released recently, so shud be included, since I am talking about past 10-12 films. Paheli i except was a flop, though it went to oscar somehow.
And as far as no. of films in a year are concerned, SRK does 2-3 films, but they all r films with some content. Not like AB.. Look below the AB films…
2004:
Aetbar, Dev, Laksya, kyun ho gaya na, Deewar, Hum Kaun Hai, Ab tumhare hawale watan sathiyon, And Veer-zaara(had SRK)
2005: Waqt, Bunti anr Bubli, Dil jo bhi kahey, Ek ajnabee, Viruddh, (Black and sarkar were good).
2006:Family, Darna zarrori hai, Babul, KANK (Had SRK)
2007:Eklavya, Nishabd, Cheeni Kum, Ramu ki aag.
WOW what a record of AB. Flops in a row.. consistency guaranteed.
faisal,
DON was as much as a hit as SARKAR RAJ was….If u don;t agree that not my problem since that is what is the fact.
And ur counting the films of BIG b which were not done in his prime. Why dont u talk about the time when BIG B was superstar i.e. in the period of 1973 till 1986 non stop…And SRK’s prime time is not even continuous and that’s why SRK can never be put in the same league as Bachchan.
Arun,
I am only comparing todays SRk to todays AB. I dont care abt AB’s past or SRK’s future. Today what i can say is that no other bollywood superstar can deliver hits with consistency than SRK.
I think u shud agree to this.
Faisal,
That’s the point. Then u can not compare AB with SRK at all since AB is 66 and SRK is 43. if u want to compare, then comparsions always happen for like things…either compare SRK with AB (when he was young…He beats SRK since SRK has not had a continuous success unlike BIG B) or wait for SRK to rach BIG B’s old age…
And regarding the consistency factor, i ahve already said that Akshay, Aamir and Hrithik are there with SRK.
yar arun bas kar de..plz….
mei compare nahi kar raha waise !! faisal ka pata nahi….as a super star SRK is ahead today n will b with big b i didn’t said surpass yet….in some years 2 come
how SARKAR RAJ was hit yar???? c’mon b a sport and accept the facts
n btw it was SIK thread…waise SIK pe baat karne ko kuch hai hi nahi ! lolx….
agreed to faisal on OSO n SIK comparison…
yehi hota hai har baar. har topic mein BIG B/SRK shuru ho jata hai…
dekh yar maine kuch shuru nahi kia
i hate to compare two…
People,
When is Billo Barber releasing by the way???
I think it might even make huge money in its first week itself.. SIK does not have to wait for 12th Dec.
But I guess the name “Billo Barber” is not the one which can create a big hype. I feek the name shud be changed for the films success. I have come across few films which peeps dont watch just becoz of its title.
Anywayz lets wait and watch.. Who knows … I even felt the same way for 2Chak De india”., but it rocked.
