Movie Review: SINGH IS KINNG by FENIL SETA

Akshay-Katrina-Vipul Shah jodi rocked in Namastey London. Akshay-Katrina-Anees Bazmee combo worked big time in Welcome. And when Akshay, Katrina, Vipul and Anees come together for Singh Is Kinng, the expectations are naturally skyhigh. But very very unfortunately, Singh Is Kinng fails to entertain and fails even more to satisfy. A fantastic chance gone terribly waste!

The story of the movie: Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood) is an underworld don in Australia, who had an able and trusted gang (Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Sudhanshu Pandey, Kamal Chopra, Jaaved Jaafery, Neha Dhupia). One day, two visitors come to his lavish bungalow-Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar) and Rangeela (Om Puri). Both came from his hometown in Punjab. The villagers were fed up of Happy Singh and they wanted to keep him away from the village for sometime, and that’s why sent him to Australia to bring back Lucky since the latter’s parents were desperate to see him. Happy drags a reluctant Rangeela with him too. After getting into the wrong flight by mistake and reaching Egypt, they finally reach Australia and meet Lucky. Lucky directly refuses to return to his native place. Later, when a surprise attack is done on Lucky, Happy goes to save his life but ends up making Lucky paralyzed! And then, by a misunderstanding, Happy is made the new King!

Singh Is Kinng is made on a lavish scale, and has a very high budget. It’s also shot at Gold Coast, which is one of the most expensive places in Australia. Inspite of all this, the film falls flat and disappoints. The entire film is made in a haphazard manner. It seems the filming was done very quickly and improperly. Editing was bad. Cinematography was not upto the mark. And there were so many loose ends in the story! Even the twist before the climax didn’t work. And what was the significance in showing that Ranvir Shorey’s dad was a lookalike of Jaaved Jaafery?

Fortunately, the movie has some pros too, which saved the film from becoming an ultimate disaster. The action sequences in the beginning were fantastic (the illogical factor in the scene can be ignored!). The scene where Akshay tries to catch the hen was very hilarious. So were some more sequences in the first half. Ranvir Shorey’s kidnapping sequence was another memorable and hilarious sequence in the film!

The climax was very bad! It was on the lines of the climax of Welcome and other Priyadarshan’s flicks. But while Welcome’s climax worked, this one fails miserably.

Performance wise, Akshay Kumar was the best! He may have done lots of comic flicks in the past, but each time he comes up with a different and brilliant performance! Akshay Kumar was the soul of the movie and the film was completely on his shoulders. And he performs his job marvelously. I just can’t wait to see him in Chandni Chowk To China!

Katrina Kaif was as usual perfect and looks hot throughout the film. She was fabulous in the song ‘Teri Ore’. Om Puri was little older for his role but he did a fabulous job. However, he had nothing to do in the 2nd half. Sonu Sood was brilliant! He was equally nice as Akshay and he proves that he has the potentiality and the ability to become a top actor in Bollywood! It’s great to see that he’s playing a solo hero in Sooraj Barjatya’s Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi!

Ranvir Shorey and Neha Dhupia were okay. Jaaved Jaafery was disappointing. Kirron Kher was as usual excellent. Yashpal Sharma was funny, while Sudhanshu Pandey was perfect. So were Manoj Pahwa and Kamal Chopra. Khayali was cool. Others were okay.

Pritam again comes up with a fantastic album. Best songs of the movie were ‘Jee Karda’, ‘Teri Ore’ and ‘Bhootni Ke’. Ben Nott and Sanjay F Gupta’s cinematography wasn’t upto the mark in some scenes, especially in the action-packed ones. Editing was very bad. Dialogues were fantastic.

Anees Bazmee and Suresh Nair came up with an interesting plot and concept, which had a good message too. Unfortunately, Anees Bazmee, as a director, couldn’t do justice this time and fails miserably. This is shocking since Anees Bazmee very well handled Welcome, No Entry and Deewangee. Mr Bazmee, hope to see you back in your old form in your next flicks!

Some of the best scenes of the movie:
1. The first scene
2. Akshay’s entry
3. The song ‘Bhootni Ke’, ‘Jee Karda’ and ‘Teri Ore’
4. Akshay and Om Puri in Egypt
5. Sonu Sood in hospital
6. The intermission point
7. The action sequence inside the mall
8. Ranvir’s kidnapped

On the whole, Singh Is Kinng can be rightly termed as ‘Biggest Disappointment of 2008’ since a lot of expectations was riding on it and unfortunately, it fails to meet them. Luckily, the movie has been released widely with 724 shows daily in Mumbai alone! So the movie would recover its costs and can even be a blockbuster. But not many would be satisfied with it!

My rating-** out of 5!

Shakti is a 1982 Bollywood film directed by Ramesh Sippy and starring Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri. It was written by the writing duo Salim-Javed. Although the film only had average success at the box office it was notable for being the first and only film to feature Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan who are considered to be two of Bollywood’s biggest superstars.

It was Released on September 22, 1982.

everybody know that Dilip saab had retired from cinema…..and for all of u bachachan was superstar in 70 & 80 …….
Inspite of that Dilip kumar was back with Bang……He won the BEst Actor filmfare awards…….His performance was more acclaimed than bachchan……….bachchan ke liye is se jyada “SHARM NAAK” baat aur kya ho sakti hai…..

    bachchan is a superstar……….no doubt……..but not a gr8 actor….

go and c kala pathar—shatrughan sinha ne baja di thi
    mohabattein—srk ne baja di.
bade miyan chhote miyan–govinda ne baja di
kohram — nana patekar ne baja di
deewar ke time me saare filmfare awards deewar ko mile the except one AWARD…..it was BEST ACTOR….Which was given to Late Sanjeev Kumar for Aandhi…..

    aur kuch batana padega inko……………
