Review- Singh is Kinng

Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films

In a recent interview, director Anees Bazmi said that he wants to make “hardcore commercial films”. His exact words were: “My basic aim is that the film is a big hit, people make a lot of money, actors can raise their fees and everybody else gets paid more. Maybe 10 critics will write bad things but the lives of 100 people will change.”

Bazmi clearly does not aspire to create art. And it’s this un-embarrassed, undisguised, undiluted intention to provide a good time that actually makes Singh is Kinng a fun ride

Thankfully, unlike Bazmi’s No Entry and Welcome, Singh is superbly silly but not tediously moronic. It’s not a series of episodes patched together. There is a semblance of a story here. Of course it’s a totally illogical one.

Happy Singh, the local village bumpkin is dispatched to Australia to bring back an errant Sardar who has now become an underworld Don. Through a series of mishaps too convoluted to explain, the don becomes paralysed and Happy takes his place.

The good-hearted, bumbling Sardar reforms the goons and eventually, in a scene of inspired lunacy, marries his sweetheart, without quite meaning to.

Bazmi and co-writer Suresh Nair keep the gags coming at furious pace. They also weave in several elaborate songs, action sequences and a half-baked message about criminal reform.

So even when the fun dips, as it does dangerously in the second half, you don’t have time or the energy to complain. But the glue that holds Singh is Kinng together is Akshay Kumar.

Akshay has a great, goofy charm that fits the role perfectly. But he also has an intrinsic cool quotient so Happy Singh is both: a virtuous son of the soil and a trendy turbanator.

This is an actor in peak form. Katrina Kaif is required to be an attractive distraction and she does this very well. The supporting cast – Kiron Kher, Om Puri, Sonu Sood and Ranvir Shorey – pitch in and ably buttress the nonsensical proceedings.

Singh is Kinng is a pedestrian film. There isn’t a flash of wit or elegance in it. Like Happy Singh, it’s basic, unpretentious and supremely content with itself. I recommend that you sit back and enjoy the ride.

  7. Friends, you all know who is Anupama Chopra? Correct me please if I am wrong, that she is wife of Chopra, who hates SRK, and who did EKLAVYA, and was very happy that his film has been chosen for oscar, so, in that excitement whatever the comments were passed, but all I know is that he said something bad about PAHELI, though PAHELI was a good film. Not neccessary every good film has to be a big hit. Some good films don’t make good money but the films are really classics and worth to watch.
And I don’t understand what were in those films in 2007, that Akshay is proud of? Those films were all same comedy, actually he always does the same comedy and were supported by other actors, not a solo efforts to make it a hit.
Actually some bolly people think if they make a patriotic film, or a film on children, or for elderly people and so on, so, these films will be highly appreciated and a blockbuster, thats the technique they are using to be popular and known. And guess what it works. Such as Amir Khan’s film, (though he is an intelligent actor, apart from some DOG blogs ) TZP, this message has been conveyed before this film as well, but people didn’t appreciate it, and when Amir Khan’s film was released it was hugely admired, and the media and everyone started to say oh, Amir has got the sense of making a good film, though it was an old idea, well, but yes, I must admit that it IS a good movie, no doubt in it. Just wanted to say that either its not a decent movie but the commentor will say in favour, because its high time for them to go against SRK. THE MIGHTY KHAN, and our dearest * SUNSHINE *, this titles suits him best.
