Vipul Shah. Anees Bazmee. Akshay Kumar. Katrina Kaif. Four names for whom success has become a habit. That makes SINGH IS KINNG the most awaited movie of the season. Must add, the wait was worth it!
You know the rules when you watch a hardcore entertainer: Just don’t look for logic. If you do, too bad for you, for you would never enjoy a film of this genre and more specifically, SINGH IS KINNG.
Anees Bazmee’s films are very high on entertainment. The plotline may be paper-thin, perhaps ludicrous and farcical, but when did Bazmee ever promise a SCHINDLER’S LIST or a SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? SINGH IS KINNG works because it delivers what it promises: Full on entertainment!
Bazmee has the knack of making immensely watchable fares that cater o the aam junta. SINGH IS KINNG isn’t a laughathon in entirety. Comedy, romance, action and drama, everything is well synchronised in those 2.10 hours here.
But, wait, SINGH IS KINNG isn’t a foolproof product. It has its share of flaws, the turn of events aren’t captivating at times, but SINGH IS KINNG moves so fast and packs in so much, there’s no time to think or analyze.
The final word? SINGH IS KINNG is a delicious and scrumptious pav-bhaji served in the finest cutlery. Your taste buds are sure to relish it… and ask for more!
Lakhan Singh aka Lucky [Sonu Sood] is the King of the Australian underworld, accompanied by his associates [played by Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande]. Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was born, there exists someone more notorious than him — Happy Singh [Akshay Kumar].
The village is fed up of Happy’s magnanimity, which has resulted in a number of hilariously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him on a long trip [that will keep him out of the village for a while!] to bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia.
The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey, accompanied by his friend, Rangeela [Om Puri], who hates Happy for dragging him into it.
The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia [Katrina Kaif], with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destination, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady [Kirron Kher].
In a strange turn of events, an attempt on Lucky’s life is foiled by a well-intentioned Happy, who fights off the attackers by risking his own life. Following the altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new King.
Few minutes into the film and you know that SINGH IS KINNG is a lavish spectacle that’s high on entertainment. Sonu Sood chasing a gora assassin at the very start or minutes later, Akshay chasing a hen — SINGH IS KINNG starts with gusto.
And Bazmee doesn’t let you wear your thinking caps all through the first hour. From India to Egypt to Australia, from the comforts of his home in Punjab, to the humble abode of a woman selling flowers in Sydney [Kirron Kher], SINGH IS KINNG involves you in the journey.
And then Akshay becomes the King. Oh, how he becomes the King is equally hilarious. The sequence at the hospital [Sonu Sood is diagnosed with a weird disorder] is simply hilarious. There’s a twist in the tale at the intermission point and the second hour, therefore, shifts gears — it changes from kabhi funny, kabhi drama to a prem kahani.
It’s smooth sailing till there’s another twist towards the pre-climax [wouldn’t like to reveal it, since it would act as a spoiler]. But, frankly, the film could’ve done without this track. The narrative, thankfully, is back on tracks soon after.
Anees Bazmee has a flair for writing great entertainers that work big time with the masala-loving junta. If you’ve loved NO ENTRY and WELCOME, you’d love SINGH IS KINNG too. This time, Bazmee shares the writing credits with Suresh Nair and the duo come up with some real wacky episodes. In terms of production design, this is Bazmee’s most lavish fare so far. It’s a grandiose product.
Pritam’s music is already popular and it compliments the goings-on completely. ‘Bhootni Ke’, ‘Jee Karda’ and the title track stand out, while ‘Teri Ore’ is easy on the nerves. Ben Nott and Sanjay Gupta’s cinematography is top notch.
Akshay Kumar takes rapid strides with SINGH IS KINNG. Sure, you’ve seen him in comic fares time and again and perhaps, there might be a doubt, Will he carry it off yet again? Oh yes, he does! There’s no saturation point as far as this actor is concerned. He holds your attention in every sequence, irrespective of how strong the scene is, and that’s the biggest compliment for any actor. SINGH IS KINNG without Akki is like an ocean without marine life. Akshay rules!
The camera loves Katrina Kaif and it shows in SINGH IS KINNG too. She looks bewitching and enacts her part with tremendous confidence. Kirron Kher is superb and so is Om Puri. Terrific performances! They compliment Akki so well. Ranvir Shorey is first-rate. Sonu Sood is another actor who’s finally getting his due in Hindi films. Javed Jaffrey’s character works big time till he does a somersault in the pre-climax. Neha Dhupia is engaging. The nok-jhonk between Sudhanshu Pandey and Yashpal Sharma is perfect. Manoj Pahwa is good.
On the whole, SINGH IS KINNG lives up to the hype and hoopla. Want a joyride without taxing your brains? Board the SINGH IS KINNG wagon. At the box-office, the film will fetch a hurricane-like start. The paid previews, the opening weekend, the first week business, everything will be record-shattering. Notwithstanding the new oppositions in the weeks to come, SINGH IS KINNG will rule the hearts of the aam junta [whose verdict matters the most] as also the box-office, proving a record holder in the final tally. Blockbuster Hit!

OSO too had a competition in saawariya(though it eventually didnt turn out to be!),so who knows BAH might be another saawariya…then there’s every possibilty that SIK wud rule BO..

Even if the Sikh community oppsoe it,then it would make the movie more hotter.I dont see that wouold be a factor.
But yes it would not do well in Mysore,Nizam and east sectors because of the overdose of Punjabi flavour in the movie.

Firstly, I observed you have developed a marked change in your perspective. Let’s come to the point. Recently a question was asked to Akshay Kumar that among KING business. He replied with a very good response. That this king business is absolutely useless. And this tag can not be associated with a particular individual on a long run. Anybody can be a KING be it Khan or KhanNA. Yesterday AK was in Delhi promoting Singh is Kinng. Again the same question was asked to him. And he replied with all modesty that according to him if any body truly deserve the title it is Amitabh Bachchan. That is called true character. We all know what position AK is in and it was long due and nobody is surprised he is the KING at present giving superhits after superhits and that to without even associating with so called big banners. You can well remember as you’ve said in your article that praise AK but not at the expense of SRK. And thats exactly what I have been saying, that Praise SRK but not at the expense of Amitabh Bachchan.
AK and Aamir khan are both now very close to Amitabh Bachchan. And they just adore AB. My point is you cannot be greater by demeaning the greats. SRK is a huge star and it is visible to all that time and again SRK wants to be greater by belittling the legend of Bachchan. But it is not working anymore. AK
already overtook SRK as his movies are doing greater business including India and overseas. And one cannot judge it only in overseas. It has to be worldwide including India as it is the main concerned area. Check out yesterday’s TOI poll, 55% of people saying AK is the real king at present. And don’t say

But the fact remains that I liked none of them. Both were mindless comedies. In fact I didn’t find them even funny. I thought they were insult to my intelligence and curiosity. And I am sure the same has happened to you all even if you don’t admit it. But when has a director like bazmee cared about it.
I don’t understand the logic that people say that Akki has surpassed SRK based on his last 2 years performance (including a big flop in Tashan). That too, despite the fact that SRK is also giving blockbusters after blockbusters. And his last flop was in 2005, that too with an off-beat subject.
When these guys talk about Akki, they never talk about the content of his films. But when they talk about SRK they will say all his films are romance (which in itself is wrong). SRK last 5 films are OSO, Chak De, Don, KANK, Paheli (each different from other).
But they never acccept that SRK has surpassed AB despite the fact that SRK has been No.1 for the last 15 years. And AB has been no where in the scene as far as box-office success is concerned.
This is just pure double standard.

The fact is that kumar’s all hits were comedy. And these comedies were also lame. When he did an action movie like tashan he was not able to pull it off.

From what iam hearing the film is a hit already and all that remains to be seen is how it sustains from monday.
But the figures collected before release are huge. It will gross 45 crore in week one alone. Even 50 crore will not surprise.

Singh Is Kinng is supposed to release on 8th of August 2008 but its advance booking has already commenced three weeks ahead of its release date. If the initial response is to go by then the team of Akshay Kumar-Katrina-Vipul Shah-Anees Bazmee already have a winner in their hands.
A cinema hall in Nagpur, Smruti Cinema has begun the advance booking three weeks ahead of the film’s actual release date and on its opening booking day itself the last show (9 p.m one) has got houseful in a matter of few hours of opening the ticket window. The rest shows for the opening first three days are on the verge of getting houseful as well. This should make the distributors of the film really happy that the heavy price they have paid for the film will definately not result in a loss. It is extremely rare that a film’s advance booking opens three weeks in advance in India and Singh Is Kinng is definately proving that it definately worth it all.
There is a lot of hype surrounding the film already and if one goes by the record of recent big releases that were all hype but no show, Singh Is Kinng will definitely emerge as the King of the box office. Akshay Kumar’s winning run of six back to back hits was halted by the flopping of Tashan and Singh Is Kinng it seems shall get him back on his hot run at the box office.

SRK’s figures are slightly less only ‘coz Paheli was an off-beat film.
You can’t crown Akki a king based on only 5 films, especially when he leads only by just 32 crores.

Big B is the real ‘King’ of Bollywood, says Akshay Kumar
Mumbai, Aug 6 (PTI) Steering clear of speculation that the movie title ‘Singh is Kinng’ was an assertion of his box office status, actor Akshay Kumar whose recent films have raked in nearly Rs 500 crore worldwide, said megastar Amitabh Bachchan is the real ‘King’.
“Bachchan has been in the film industry over over 35 years and he is the real king. There are many who are around for 15-20 years and like to call themselves king. There is only one king and he is Amitabh Bachchan. I am merely acting in a film called ‘Singh is Kinng’,” Akshay said, without naming Shah Rukh Khan, who is called ‘King Khan’.
He was speaking at a promotional event of ‘Singh is Kinng’ which will be released later this week.
Many in trade circles had commented that the title ‘Singh is Kinng’ was an attempt on Akshay’s part to show that he was the “King of Bollywood”.
To a question on whether his comments would fuel another round of speculation, Akshay said, “I said what I feel. Even after 35 to 40 years in the industry, Amitabh Bachchan is a humble man. He folds his hands when he speaks. I have worked with him in seven films. If my comments lead to a controversy, I don’t care.” Akshay, who is shooting in Los Angeles for Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kambhakkt Ishq’, specially came here for three days to promote ‘Singh is Kinng’. He also participated in the inaugural show of Bachchan’s world tour ‘Unforgettable’ in Toronto on July 18.
When asked whom he was referring to in a recent statement daring his detractors to come out in the open, Akshay said he had not named any one and would not like to do so. “The message has been conveyed to the person who needed to know,” he added. PTI

Singh Is Kinng is big hit but this does not mean Akki is No1 yet but if SRK fails to deliver with RNBDJ he will be.
Bur RNBDJ is also aiming at the same big punjabi audience like SIK so its its unlikely to fail.
SRK will always be King….Honestly i didnt like Welcome,Hey Baby or Tashan…i dont know people can watch crappy movies..but Bhool was ok and Namaste London was good…Akki is just an good actor but not even closely compared to SRK…for Akki all the best for SIK…

This is the worst Akshay kumar movie!!!! Guys these people are making fool of the aam junta by this unprecedented hype. The products is a complete loser. While watching the movie, I was forced to think that ‘Tashan’ was better. I hardly smiled watching the movie and came out very very disappointed. These people want to earn all their money by the hype created and believe me its a total dud…… I would not even give this bullshit one star….
