What We have been served in the last few months….

With crores of rupees just gone wasted, its like a self goal by Bollywood, serving us below average and less on content movies with only one hit from the house of Aamir Khan. Have a look :

KISMET KONNECTION

Aziz Mirza returns with his new movie after “Chalte Chalte”. But this time its not Shahrukh but Shahid in a role of next to door young person with a mission to make it big. The story line has the same old tried and tested formulas of love & misunderstandings so there is nothing new to see. The director doesn’t try new plots or topics but opts to stick on to his old story ideas only.

The only lighter moment comes with Juhi Chawla who plays a fortune teller and who guides Shahid for his future and about his luck factor. This part of the script makes you remember an english flick “Just My Luck” which has a similar plot where, good luck gets transferred from one person to another. But even this interesting part is not handled well enough and it completley fails to entertain the viewer.

Even when the promos of this movie started, they failed to create any excitement and the same was the result after its release. There are all elements of an Aziz Mirza film in this. A boy wants to make big, meets a girl, an affair starts after misunderstadings, a talk about social values, a group of old people, clashes between classes in the society and last minute drama. But sadly the movie fails to enertain.

MISSION ISTAANBUL

In recent times we have seen many movies with “A Great Look”, “Lavish Stunts” and giving good vibes before the release. And when we see the movie, it seems to be having no soul with only a good body with branded clothes. Its like a Mannequin, stylishly dressed, standing in the show-window but having no soul, no life in it. Its time our filmmakers should move ahead and stop wasting resources on mindless action flicks. Mission Istaanbul is a disappointment for the viewers as it had good promos but no content in the final product.

MONEY HAI TO HONEY HAI

There are numerous comedy films which have been served left & right to us in the past few months and most of them were just trash and disaster at the box office. MHTHH is a little different from them all because the director seems to be in dilemma while making it. Ganesh Acharya mixes the film and tries to capture two genres, one is Comedy and the other is a Social Drama.

Like his earlier venture “Swami”, the director seems to love Social Dramas and therefore tries to incorporate that element too in the movie which otherwise is promoted as a pure comedy. But sadly both the elements fall flat and the final product is not that amusing for the viewers.

CONTRACT

Still Waiting for RGV’s old spirited form. The plot was partly similar to “Departed” and was also quite predictable for an underworld movie. Putting a spy in the Terrorists Gang and then tracking their plans is what we have already seen numerous times in Bollywood movies. The criminal characters and their presentation, resembled RGVs own “Company” to a huge extent. Like the female accompanist in the gang was exactly the same as Manisha Koirala with Ajay Devgan.

RGV has got a great creative film-maker in himself, but in recent times he seems to be lost his way. Especially in the music department, as music of almost all his recent films have gone unnoticed. As I see it, new unexploited plots are the key point to have him back in form. Still Waiting for RGV to get back in form again! Sadly it was not this time.

JAANE TU YA JAANE NA  (The only saving grace in the last few months)

The main points why the film works is its fresh outlook, new energetic & cool faces and above all the freak out language used in the script with carefree “Tu”, “Tera” in the dialogues. It just takes you away from the formal “Aap” attitude and makes you feel more light.

Music by the maestro A.R. Rahman no doubt is outstanding with “Aditi” song standing at the top. Fresh voices surely have added more flavour to the movie. But I found the lyrics department rather weak. Apart from the “Aditi” track, rest could have been more expressive in content. In few words, the movie is fresh, has a young feel  and above all makes you feel lighter in the world of heavy burdens. That’s what makes it work.

LOVE STORY 2050

Huge expectations and a big launch of a talented star Harman Baweja was all in the air before the film hit the screen. And the other exciting feature of the movie was its theme of Time Travel into the future. These were the thoughts in the mind of every viewer before seeing the movie. But after watching it the viewer feels dejected with some sad feelings for the hard working debutant Harman.

Inspirations to the movie include “Back To the Future” series & “Time Machine”. The sequence of Priyanka dying in an accident is highly inspired. In the English version the hero goes back in the past to change the happenings and tries to save his girlfriend. But each time he goes back she dies in a different manner. That part of the plot is more interesting than going into the future and winning over the girl again. If you surely want to enjoy the Time Machine rides then you must watch the three movie series of “Back To The Future”.

In all the movie which is a launch pad for Harman Baweja could have been much better with all the backing of a huge budget. But Harman surely makes his presence felt in the industry.

And as the reports are coming in “Ugly aur Pugly” aka “My Sassy Girl” is also on the way of becoming another disaster.

Hope we get to see better films in the coming Festive seasons.

  4. Bobby welcome after long time

Like always agree with ur article,bt like know more abt jaane tu

    I think it was overrated

  5. Jaane Tu….no doubt had nothing new in the storyline and also in narration.
I think two main reasons are there for its success.
One is The Lead Heroine Genelie D &
    Second its music.

    As they say
A Hit music is half the battle won.

The Midas touch of Aamir was also there behind its success.

  8. Hi Booby

Nice to read your article after long.As alaways, your article is sensible and unbiased.Kudos to your for this.

Reg Jane tu…its definitely a overrated movie. But as i always maintained ..audience is the kink .when they gave thumbs up to the movie..we have to respect their viwes.

I always believe BO is the only parameter for assessing a movie with some rare exceptions.

  9. Hello Rajeev,
Firstly, I observed you have developed a marked change in your perspective. Let’s come to the point. Recently a question was asked to Akshay Kumar that among KING business. He replied with a very good response. That this king business is absolutely useless. And this tag can not be associated with a particular individual on a long run. Anybody can be a KING be it Khan or KhanNA. Yesterday AK was in Delhi promoting Singh is Kinng. Again the same question was asked to him. And he replied with all modesty that according to him if any body truly deserve the title it is Amitabh Bachchan. That is called true character. We all know what position AK is in and it was long due and nobody is surprised he is the KING at present giving superhits after superhits and that to without even associating with so called big banners. You can well remember as you’ve said in your article that praise AK but not at the expense of SRK. And thats exactly what I have been saying, that Praise SRK but not at the expense of Amitabh Bachchan.

AK and Aamir khan are both now very close to Amitabh Bachchan. And they just adore AB. My point is you cannot be greater by demeaning the greats. SRK is a huge star and it is visible to all that time and again SRK wants to be greater by belittling the legend of Bachchan. But it is not working anymore. AK
already overtook SRK as his movies are doing greater business including India and overseas. And one cannot judge it only in overseas. It has to be worldwide including India as it is the main concerned area. Check out yesterday’s TOI poll, 55% of people saying AK is the real king at present. And don’t say
after reading that, AK has bought TOI. Because facts can’t be denied. Anything can possible in Bollywood. Nothing is permanent. And I wonder why SRK disappeared from the media spotlight in the last 4 months. Finally I appreciate for your change in perspectives of seeing things.
