SRK,HRITHIK,DHONI AHEAD OF BIG B IN ENDORSEMENTS
NEW DELHI: Gone are the days when cricketers dominated the advertising scene. The power balance between sports and the silver screen for celebrity endorsements has shifted almost entirely to Bollywood, a fact revealed when ET scanned through five-year data collated by media tracking firm TAM AdEx.
Surprisingly, this is despite the huge success of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Here are the hard facts:
The number of brands endorsed by Sachin Tendulkar has dropped from 10 to 6 over a period of five years, Rahul Dravid’s endorsements have slipped from 12 to 5 and Sourav Ganguly barely has a couple to his credit, down from 9 in 2003.
The only exceptions are MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, who have grown their endorsements year-on-year. The promising younger lot, which was much talked-about during the IPL debut season, hasn’t found any significant takers either.
Shah Rukh Khan’s endorsements have gone up from 6 to 18 in the same period, Hrithik Roshan’s have increased from 1 to 11 and Saif Ali Khan’s deals have doubled from 4 in 2003 to 8 now.
Even Big B Amitabh Bachchan, who has gone down the power list in the last two years, has managed 10 endorsements, which is higher than all the cricketers except Dhoni, who has 15 existing deals and is still counting. Other Bollywood stars like Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham have between 3 and 7 deals in their pockets.
PepsiCo has signed up the maximum number of movie stars this year. The list includes Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif. What’s more, the company has dropped Tendulkar, Ganguly and Dravid from its list. PepsiCo marketing executive director Punita Lal said: “Pepsi will continue to leverage cricket as a platform; but it’s a fact that Bollywood is ahead of cricket in terms of endorsements.”
Rival Coca-Cola, a heavy advertiser during IPL, chose Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar for its summer campaigns and gave cricketers a miss. Max New York Life, another major advertiser during IPL, chose to end its contract with Dravid even though he was captaining the Bangalore Royal Challengers team.
In such a scenario, it is not surprising that talent management firm Globosport has shifted focus to Bollywood from cricket. CEO Anirban Das said, “With the exception of Dhoni, it’s the movie stars that connect with the audiences better across genres.”
Other lower-rung players like Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan have all but disappeared from the endorsement circuit, while Anil Kumble hasn’t made any impact. Sehwag and Zaheer, in fact, had as many as 13 and 7 brand associations respectively few years ago.

Actors half of Big Bs age have gone ahead of him in ads.
SRK has always been a fav with ad-makers,HR popularity increased post D2 and got only better with JAs success. In cricket Dhoni has gone ahead of sachin.
Manoj,
If calculate the value of earnings then sachin will come right after SRK and Dhoni.
Sachin alongwith SRK used to be the Badshaha of Ad world few yeras back. There is nobody in India who can connecet as swiftly with the audience like Sachin.
But with time and retirement is close, sachin has lost out some of the AD deals.
But still he is the second highest earner of revenue from AD after Dhoni in cricket and third after SRK and dhoni as far as celebrities as a whole are concerned.
Cricketers have a less shelf life as far as ads are concenered.
Rajeev!
Rightly said!
SRK and SRT have been the biggest stars of the country for the last 15 years. This is depicted very clearly by the number of endorsement offers they have had in this peroid.
SRT is being replaced not ‘coz he is a less star now. It’s ‘coz he is in and out of the team for the last couple of years due to injury. And marketing guys like to keep people who are constantly in the public mindspace.
But I seriously believe that apart from brands like Pepsi (which talks to the young audience), most of the other brands will still like to have him as a endorser, if he is a bit affordable. And even after he retires, he will be doing ads unlike Dravid, Ganguly and others.
wtf Bigb is 65 yrs old . and still he is doing 10 ads thats nearly same as hrithiks 11 . that says something
Aug 4 2008: Big B’s Unforgettable tour is a big, big hit in the US. There is no denying the fact. Wherever he and his troupe goes, people come in their thousands, spending money and time. At least a considerable amount of money. Ticket costs somewhere from US$ 150-US$ 600.
The admiration of the Indian community living abroad towards the Big B is not unknown. Their admiration for Aishwarya Rai is also great. The two get loudest applause whenever the two appear on the stage.
It must have been mere the star power of the Big B that when the power to the sound went out, people instead of complaining and throwing shoes or tomatoes as is the norm in India stood up and encouraged Amitabh Bachchan.
They all clapped in unison after realizing that the cut in sound power was not something planned by the organizers.
Amitabh Bachchan who must have gone through such incidents while performing in India or elsewhere and must be knowing how people angrily react in such situation has fallen in love with his audience.
The Big B while appreciating the people’s response says, “But let me compliment Houston for giving us the most electric and moving moment last night. It happened when I was on stage. In the middle of ‘Rang Barse’, the power to the sound went. No mike, no electronics from the keyboard, nothing. A nightmare situation for any performer and any concert. In a flash realizing the situation, the percussions and the drums who need no power, kept the beat going and every one from backstage ran on to the stage - Abhishek, Ritesh, Vishal, Shekhar, the dancers everyone and just kept clapping to the beat and dancing. And then..”
Sheena, daughter of veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy, is nowadays travelling with the Bachchans for their world concert ‘Unforgettable’ - only to click photographs of the show and to compile them into a book.
Sheena is a professional photographer and has done assignments with personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Imran Khan, Naomi Campbell and Zakir Husain.
Amitabh regularly posts pictures of the event on his blog with detailed captions and says Sheena is not too happy with this.
“The demand for the photographs of the shows is increasing. I am compiling some more pictures. But this is not being received well by the photographer (Sheena) since she has been assigned to do a book on the tour. She feels all her work is going out to the world before time,” he posted on his blog site.
Big B is all praise for Sheena. He wrote on his blog: “The magnificence of the arena and the enthusiasm of the crowds are so beautifully captured by Sheena Sippy Kapoor, who has been assigned to do a book on the tour.”
Sheena is married to Shashi Kapoor’s son Kunal. Her family’s association with the Bachchan’s dates back to the time when her father had directed Amitabh in blockbuster ‘Sholay’.
Thereafter, even her brother Rohan Sippy teamed up with Abhishek in ‘Bluffmaster’.
Now, she is busy capturing the special moments of the family.
To this, Amitabh stated: “We are indeed such an integrated fraternity and proud of it.”

Chopra said he will start his next film - “Pocket Maar” - with Amitabh Bachchan in October. The film is a family drama which will depict that crime, no matter how big or small, is a sin.
“Bachchan plays part of the family that is affected by the Pocket Maar. Rest of the cast is being finalised,” he said.
Chopra said B R Films has ventured into production on a big scale after several years with a slew of films in pre-production and production stages.

Akshay: The real King is Amitabh Bachchan
Syed Firdaus Ashraf

Shah Rukh Khan may call himself King Khan [Images] but Akshay Kumar [Images] feels that the real king of Bollywood is Amitabh Bachchan [Images].
“In my opinion, the real king of Bollywood is Amitabh Bachchan,” Akshay said, at an event to promote his new film, Singh is Kinng [Images]. “He has been in the industry for the last 40 years while we have been here for 15 years only. To become a king, you don’t need money and power. You must have positive energy and Mr Bachchan has that.”
“I have done seven films with Amitji and he is so humble and down-to-earth,” Akshay continued. “If a controversy erupts from my statement, I don’t mind. I really feel he is the king of our industry.”
Akshay seemed to gel very well with Amitabh Bachchan after the Unforgettable tour, where they performed together in Toronto.
“My competition is with newcomers, not with people of my age group,” Akshay went on to say, referring to the three Khans.
When a reporter congratulated him on making Katrina Kaif’s [Images] career a success, Akshay replied, “Why are you singling her out? You can say she made me successful. I have done hit films with her, as also with [producer] Vipul Shah and
colleague Javed Jaffrey [Images], with whom I have done films earlier. Filmmaking is all about teamwork and we are all responsible when a film clicks.”
Singh is Kinng is set to release with a record number of 1,800 prints on August 8.
The last big film to release a large number of prints was Om Shanti Om [Images] with 1,500 prints last November.

Nishit,
What about Aamir the Thief. He is not getting ads???
Nishit ..go suck some ad makers balls for Aamir and your fav thief(aamir) would get some deals for sure.
Arun,
Its not about who calls himself king.SRK never calls himself king. Its media made.
But its all about BO successes.
Amitabh was the king of BO in 70 and 80’s.
SRK is the king of BO in 90’s and in this decade.
Arun,
Yes i must admit even in the age of 66 Bacchan is doing more ads than atleast AAmir Khan, who calls himself a big star.
Only SRK,HR,Dhoni and Sachin are ahead of Bacchans in the ad field.Thats a great achievement for Amitabh Bacchan.
And yes its not about how many ads one is doing..its about how much revenue he is getting out of that.
In this SRK leads by miles .
Rajeev,
Infact there are many KINGS today. And SRK has infact admitted that he is KING, else why do u think Akshay has made a swipe at those who like to call themselves “KINGS”. Come on, it’s a well known accepted fact that SRK promotes himself as that. I also like to believe that he is KING today. But he is not alone. He is there with Akshay, Hrithik and Aamir. Each one of them is doing or achieving one or the other benchmark in indian/glamour industry. That’s my point. It’s seems little hard to digest to keep calling only one person KING today based on his/her past laurels considering there are others who have made significant contributions in 2008.
Rajeev ur marketting balls of srk….and ur mum is marketting my balls. in d market….and what abt delhi??/ r v meeting boy toy???
Nishit,
I would be at Delhi between 10-15 th Aug.I will stay in Hotel Lee Meridian.
Search my name in the registrar and come to my room.
We would see who has got the balls.
Arun,
I agree to your statement that Even HR,Ak and aamir are at the top league.
But if you see BO records..
Akshya is doing well only from 2006(Consistent)
Aamir is doing well only from 2006(Consistent)
Same with HR.
Where as SRK is consistent throughout.Secondly SRKs worldwide collection is way ahead than the above three.
So its fitting that he would be called King of BO.
Arun,
“”Infact there are many KINGS today. And SRK has infact admitted that he is KING, else why do u think Akshay has made a swipe at those who like to call themselves “KINGS””"
I dont agree to above statement.
when there is head on collission at the BO SRK have always prevailed.
1.DON VS Janeman: DOns opening 25 cr .Janeman collected 15 cr.
where is Janeman both Salman and AK were there.
2.Even AK is so scared of SRK that he has postponed his movie CCTC which was supposesd release with Biloo barber(Even though SRK has miniscule role in it)
3.Even aamir khan backed up from his earleir release dat of Ghajni.
In the contrary SRK have never shied of taking challenges.
Nishit,
I am sure if you meet me at delhi..i would teach you a lesson or two about marketing. Its a promise dude.
Arun,
Can you give me one instance where SRK calls himself a KING.
