So who is the bigger Bollywood star today: Amitabh Bachchan or Shahrukh Khan?One is a much-respected, much-admired sexagenarian who has been around as an actor through 169 films in 40 years. The other is a little over 40, very lively, extremely articulate and has done 64 films in 15 years. Both are fiercely self-centred, insecure and as actors, suffer from obvious limitations on screen. And both command a fan following cutting across gender, generation and nationality.But Bachchan being Bachchan, has helpfully offered to clear the air by drawing attention to his popularity vis-à-vis Shahrukh’s, as per recorded TVR (television rating) points. Quoting published reports of the TAM Peoplemeter System Media research, Bachchan pointed out in his blog that the ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati?’ episodes he had conducted generated a TVR of 14.13 points on an average during the first season and 11.14 points during the second. Against this, KBC-3 which Shahrukh hosted, could deliver an average TVR of 6.8 points only and now, his ‘Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai?’ has managed a TVR of just about 2.5 points on an average.
Clearly, this is a case of over-exposure and diminishing returns. But again, Bachchan being Bachchan, has feigned ignorance and sought the indulgence of his fans to judge for themselves as to who is the bigger star. Lest his intentions be doubted, he also asked for ‘some geniuses who could enlighten’ him on this. And when Shahrukh chose to maintain a dignified silence, Bachchan issued an apology ‘with folded hands’ should he have hurt anybody’s sentiments.Ironically enough, Shahrukh, unlike Bachchan, is a product of television. He built his fan base with soaps like Circus and Fauji in 1988-89 and thereafter moved to Bollywood. So the requirements of the small screen were not new to him when he returned to television with KBC-3 in 2007 - only the format was different. What went against him was the precedent that had already been set by Bachchan, thereby prompting comparisons between the two. And since KBC-3 did not work, viewers were pre-conditioned towards rejecting another programme in the quiz format. (True, the IPL was also a debilitating factor). In television, whatever be the programme format, it is the early bird advantage that everybody strives for.
The issue assumes relevance at a time when a number of big screen stars are being lured to television by the money the medium offers. Salman Khan is struggling with his Dus Ka Dum on a miserable TVR of 2.6 points for which he is being paid a package of Rs 90 crore for 100 episodes (recently said to have been hiked to Rs100 crore for 104 episodes). Ajay Devgan, wife Kajol and ma-in-law Tanuja came in as a package for a similarly obscene amount, but could not notch the TVR beyond 1.33 points for their Rock and Roll Family show. Likewise, Shatrughan Sinha played the judge of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge-4, which could generate a peak rating of 1.9 points only. Now Akshay Kumar is sticking his neck out with a reality show, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, for which he is charging a whopping Rs1.5 crore per episode for 16 episodes.
Apart from the money, there are other reasons for a movie star to feel compelled to explore the possibilities of television. They all know that nobody from their fraternity has ever got lucky by switching tracks to television. (If at all, it has been the other way round.) But still, they would all like to keep this option open, as a post-retirement plan. Secondly, television is a booming industry and there can be no saying how much the future can have in store for them. Thirdly, and most importantly, it is the delusion of grandeur that drives them to television. Every movie star believes that he has the ability to move mountains, change the direction of the wind and whip up mass hysteria by his very presence. Having seen that, done that on the big screen, he believes that television is mere child’s play.
Little does the movie star realise that the demands of the two mediums are as different as say, theatre is from a circus performance. How unsettling a switch to television can be for a movie star was evident when a consummate actor like Naseeruddin Shah did a chat show, ‘Super Selector’ in 2001. He looked a fish out of water. So did Madhuri Dixit when she anchored ‘Swayamvar’ around the same time. But more than their discomfort, what bothered media watchers, was whether the audience was prepared to accept them in their new avatar. The same is true of a television star moving into cinema. Barring an odd Rajiv Khandelwal who shifted to films with Aamir and of course, Shah Rukh, a change of media space does not work.

This article says KBC 3 is a flop ,where the truth is KBC 3 TRP were 6.8 as said by the article ,where as the most successful IPLs TRP are 6.3.
This goes on show that the parameters has changed with flooding of TV channels.Now any rating above 4 is good and above 5 is great.
The TRP rating of 6 in 2008 is equal to or more than the TRP ratings of 12 in 2000.
Secondly,its a fact that all the TV shows does well when it is aired for the first time.
When KBC 1 came ,it had novelity factor .Similarly programms like Nach Baliye,Indian Idol,laughter Cghallnge..all had better TRPs than their second and third versions.

The Amitabh Bachchan led Unforgettable Tour is drawing packed crowds despite massive ticket rates, once again reviving a format (The Bollywood Concert) that was being said to have lost its sheen in recent years.
Bachchan fans and Bollywood buffs have been queuing up to grasp a view of Bollywood’s biggest stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Aishwarya Rai, Ritesh Deshmukh and Preity Zinta among others.
Says a source, “Ticket prices and seating capacities for other stars’ concerts in recent past have been lower than the Unforgettable Tour but they still did’t draw nearly the crowds this tour is getting”
In fact the Rockstars show led by Salman Khan, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham and Kareena Kapoor reportedly could sell only 300 tickets in London when the stars were last there. In Birmingham, that concert drew a turnout of barely 2000 against a capacity of 18000.
In contrast, the Bachchan tour drew over 13,000 in Toronto alone, and the crowds have since been only growing. Over 16,000 were reported in Los Angeles last Saturday.
Amitabh Bachchan is credited as the pioneer of the Bollywood Concert. He started the phenomenon in the early 1980s, over 25 years ago. What makes Bachchan concerts different from the others is that unlike rest of the stars, Bachchans do their own playback, especially Amitabh Bachchan. The tours may be among the last times the superstar may be seen on stage and the fans have queued up, often up to the rafters (see picture above).
Says a well placed source, “This could be the highest attended tour of all tours.”

The ratings of Paanchvi Pass have dipped considerably since the advent of Salman Khan’s Dus Ka Dum and now Khatron Ke Khiladi.
Rediff.com recently held a survery where they asked the readers to name Bollywood’s most over rated actors. Guess what? Shahrukh Khan has won the title. There is no doubt that he is the King of Bollywood but also there is no doubt that he is not such a great actor. He had been lucky with all the Yash Raj/Karan Johar camp’s romantic comedies. Some voters mentioned that he displayed fairly good acting skills in movies like Swades and Chak De. I don’t agree with them, I think Swades didn’t work just because of his over acting. Same goes for Paheli where he and Rani Mukherjee over acted through out the movie.
Ohh poor Shahrukh. It seems like every one in Bollywood has suddenly started to feel that they are better than Shahrukh Khan. Long time ago Salman calimed to be better than him, recently Aamir made a comment about being a better actor than Shahrukh Khan and now reality TV’s drama queen and item girl Rakhi Sawant has claimed that her item number in Krazzy 4 is better than the item numbers of Shahrukh and Hrithik.
Rakhi Sawant said “I am very glad that my
dance will be compared with Shahrukh Khan and Hrithik’s. Shahrukh’s item song is totally Western while mine has all the Indian touches (latkas and jhatkas) which will surely be liked by our audience. I would say my dance is better than his since it is more colorful.” Poor Raakhi who is currently busy doing another reality tv show (Where at the end she is guaranteed to be dumped by the audience and judges) has struggled so hard but it seems like she will never go beyond the item numbers. Hrithik Roshan has thanked every body who did Item songs for the his home production Krazzzy 4. In an interview he said:
I’m doing the song for my own home production. But Shah Rukh has gone out of his way to accommodate the project because he respects my dad. His gesture has touched all of us. It’s very kind of him. 20th October, 2006 saw the release of DON, starring Shahrukh Khan as DON; Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal among others. Farhan Akhtar marketed the movie as “his” version of the 1978 Nariman Irani’s mega blockbuster Don, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran. It certainly is “his” version, as he not only changed quite a few sequences but also the end completely!!DON, as a movie, is technically well made. Its got grandeur, style and great music - a perfect masala for a sure shot box office success. In fact, the very fact that it was promoted as a “remake” surely had everyone wondering what Farhan’s magic would do. The movie, undoubtedly is well made. What it grossly lacks is the brilliance of the actors which formed the essence of the original Don.
Shahrukh has been portrayed well, with all the style and grandeur but even when donning the best designer suits, he can not match the charisma of the original Don (Amitabh). In Don-I, when Amitabh enters, you can feel the sense of power oozing from him. He terrifies as well as amuses you, unlike shahrukh, who is simply incapable of having that kind of command over the role and the audience!!

U will find the character of Vijay Dinanath Chavan amongst the veterans Gabbar Singh, Mogambo etc. And mind u, SRK’s roles o baazigar and darr do not find a mention in 1 to 10 list. Do u know the biggest blockbuster of all times is still SHOLAY…U can watch that film endlessly and if Sholay is just talked about, then DDLJ is not even worth a mention. That is the kind of difference the 2 films will always have. Plus the fact that Kajol had a better and a longer role in DDLJ proves that SRK had to depend upon an actress for a blockbuster. Where as in BIG b’s time, he was the one man industry. I ask u all bunch of jokers….Why no one calls SRK a ONE man industry??? Because he has to depend on others to make a movie successful. he can’t carry a film on his own shoulders alone….this is something whihc BIG B did with ease and we saw his 5-6 films releasing in his heya days and all becoming Superhits. yes SRK started the trend of negative heroes but then went endlessly (and painfully) for his stupid safe-playing big-banner lover-boy roles. it was the very end of SRK, the real actor we saw in Baazigar, Darr etc and then on rare ocassions in CDI and Swades. he always plays safe, he does not face challenges. I agree that TODAY he is the biggest star but his stardom is a creation of his loyals (chopras, karans, farahs etc). this is only his startdom that a crap like OSO becomes a superhit.
I agree that he is a very good actor (though not a great one, and surely far more over-rated) but he wasted his potential in doing garbage movies he is doing since a decade now, the most recent being OSO and KANK (he was on his irritating best in KANK, one of the silliest and most irritating and nonsense movies of the bollywood history). SRK is not associated to quality cinema. I have much more respect for Aamir in this regards.
AB is a marvellous actor, far superior to SRK. and at least he is not afraid of taking challenges. and he does not need (chopras, karans, farahs etc) to back him. and btw those who say Boothnath and Cheeni Kum were flops know very well in their hearts that they are lying. again problem with AB these days is same, the choice of movies. he has given some craps Nishabd, KANK, Aag, etc in recent times, but anyways still he is more open in doing challenging roles, not like SRK.

First thing first, DDLJ is not just a little love story. It’s much much bigger than that. It started a new trend in the Indian film industry. It changed the way films were made. It inspired innumerable such films. Sholay didn’t inspire any film. It was itself a copy of a japanese film. DDLJ is longest running movie in the world. Sholay might have earned more money, but that is also ‘coz of its an older movie than DDLJ and hence earned money due to repeated releases.
Secondly, Sholay was not an AB movie. It was a Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan’s movie. AB was the smallest star of Sholay. Calling Sholay an AB movie is like saying HAHK a Mohnish Behl’s movie.

looks like the show is truly unbelievable! i’ve never seen so much crowd in a packed arena and that too for an indian concert/tour. hats off to the entire team for bringing this to bear….huge undertaking and to see you all come off with such flying colors is absolutely noteworthy! same for the tremendous crowd and audience… unbeliveable.
i so wish i could be part of it. i see every picture that you’ve posted and get even more depressed as that could have been one of us in vancouver…alas that is not going to happen.
i’ve sent multple emails to ethnic guru (local promoter for the vancouver show) to inquire what happened and asking if there is any chance of the show being back on, but it falls on deaf ears. no reply, no answer.

Totally disagree…Earlier, even Anil Kapoor played a villian in Awargi and in early 70’s BIG B played a villian in Parwana and even kills the actress’s father becaus =e he refuses to get her married off to him as she loves the hero, Navin Nischol. What du call this? A heroic deed??? Even ur SRK has agreed that he copied pieces of BIG B’ parwana and took inspiration from that film.

I have watched this movie many times before but some scenes in the movie are just awesome…my favorite ones include: When Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) meets Kancha (Danny Denzongpa) and other one is when Anna Shetty (Deepak Shirke) kidnaps Vijay’s sister Siksha (Neelam)….watching Krishnan Iyer MA (Mithun Chakraborty) fights and how Vijay enters the place and saves his sister was just amazing…
Amitabh and Mithun both are just awesome…
