were CDI and TZP genuine blockbusters?

Q. You have Chak De India, Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na as blockbusters but in my town CDI and TZP have never been released and it does not look like JTYJN will be either. This is probably the case in most small cities and towns which make up most of India. Don’t you think it’s a bit ridiculous to call films blockbusters that have not even been released in most of India let alone run.

A. The huge business in multiplexes allow films which cater to urban audiences to earn big money today. Last year Welcome did 15% less than Taare Zameen Par at multiplexes but outgrossed it by over 200%+ in smaller cities to gross 15+ crore more. Partner grossed 30% less than Chak De India at multiplexes but outgrossed it by 100-150% in smaller cities to get a similar final total. As multiplexes are built in smaller centres then the gap will get bigger between the urban blockbuster and mass blockbuster but for this equilibrium to be formed between small and big cities it is going to take 5-7 years more. Once the multiplex revolution is complete then it will be back to like it was ten years ago when it was very rare for a film to become outright hit let alone blockbuster without good B+C centre business. The true recent blockbusters are OSO, Welcome and Partner but the demographics of business today means that CDI, TZP and JTYJN are also blockbusters even though their viewership in cinemas may be half of the mass blockbusters.

  1. i think cdi /tzp budget was 15-20 cr but both crossed 60 cr mark so they cud be called BB ,but i dont know if they cud be termed ‘universal success’

  2. Manoj,

Agree. But even some movie do well in small centres not inbig centres.there are a very few which can be termed as universal success.

Strictly in monetary terms CDI and TZP were BBs for sure.

  3. i agree with u Rajeev…

  4. Rajeev,
Take the case of DCH .it was a success in ONLY multiplexes that too with a restriction (i mean not a grand success),but most trade analysts say its a big success.

but if u look into BOI,they say “Avg in cities, flop in interiors”.

  5. Manoj,

DCH was avg at best.Even Laggan was not a big hit and was not a success in interiors.

  6. if we use this logic then SRK has no blockbusters!!

    hahahahha

None of his films appeal to the interiors, his films only run at multiplexes.

Look at his OSO after 4 weeks it was out of cinemas..but due to the mulitplex crowd it made its money.

The LAST BIG UNIVERSAL hit was GADAR!!

i dont think SRK has ever had a univeral hit like GADAR.

even DDLJ only appealed to the city audiences it lacked audience in rural india.

  7. ^^^ lolz good joke Rizwan . DDLJ did great business in A, B and C centres . KKHH did ok in C centres but was fanulous in other two . as such multiplex thing came in from 2002 and not before that .

But to me what should matter is final figures and its status in each cicruit and not individual centres.

  8. Rizwan!

“even DDLJ only appealed to the city audiences it lacked audience in rural india.”

Don’t make me laugh. All SRK movies were as good a hit in the interiors as they were in cities.

He might not be as big as mithun or govinda but SRK was always a big star in the interiors.

What you are saying is true for Aamir Khan. He never had an appeal in the interiors. That is why he was not a big star in the 90s and now since small centers don’t contribute much revenue, he has become a big star.

  9. Rizwan,

I dont find words what to say.

I have seen DDLJ first in a small town(Population 50,000) on its 15 th day.It was houseful. Then i saw the movie again in a relatively bigger city(Population 2 lacs) on its 110 th day of release. This i am talking about a state which is one of the top 3 poorest states in India.

If you say DDLJ is not a interior hit..then its laughable stuff and only making a fool of yourself.

I dont like using these harsh words, especially after we made freinds the other day.But your ridiculous comments leaves me with other option.

At one end you say SRK movies do well only in big cities ..then you say he makes crap movies.Do you think big city audiences accept craps such easily.Multiplexes are suppose to accept only so called intelligent movies .Right???

You make up your mind what you want to say.then give your opinion.

  10. Rizwan,

I appeal to you not to make fool of yourself over here.

  11. Rizwan!

BTW, Main Hoon Na, Don, OSO were big hits all over the country.
