Sarkar Raj Tamasha Continues (Thanks Samia For Link)
Wednesday 2nd July 2008 19.00 IST
By Mohit Sharma
After making some journalists in the media think that their film was a hit, this week it was the turn of the trade as advertisements were put in trade papers to show the business of Sarkar Raj but the trade just laughed them off. Mohan Bansal a distributor from Rajasthan remarked “Sarkar Raj will be out of theatres here in Jaipur on Friday and its not much better elsewhere, its a loser, films released alongside it like Aamir and Mere Baap Pehle Aap have done much better.”
The advertisements did not show the most important figures and those are presented below.
Sarkar Raj Distributor Losses
Distributor-PVR Pictures (Delhi/UP/East Punjab/Mysore)
Loss-1.55 crore FLOP
Distributor-Kapurchand PVT LTD (West Bengal)
Loss-40 lakhs FLOP
Distributor-Maa Sona Films (Bihar)
Loss 20 lakhs FLOP
Distributor-Rajshri Pictures PVT LTD (CP Berar)
Loss-25 lakhs FLOP
Distributor- Sahara One Media Entertainment LTD (CI/Rajasthan)
Loss-80 lakhs DISASTER
Distributor-Indra Films (Nizam)
Loss 10 lakhs FLOP
Distributor-Harward Entertainment (Tamil Nadu/Kerala)
Loss-5 lakhs FLOP
Distributor-Eros International (Overseas)
Loss-1.25 crore FLOP
It can been seen from the figures that the distributors of Sarkar Raj in various circuits are losing between 10-50% of their investment and that is where the box office fate is decided of a film. The profits made by selling a film does not mean success because this way very few films are flops, a film is a hit when the investors you sell to make money and sadly with Sarkar Raj the investors lost money no matter what the team of Sarkar Raj would like to believe and want to portray to the world.

the biggest rubbish i have ever heard!!
This again proves that boxofficeindia are false and spreading malicious rumours. I think they need to be sued!
I hope they are.
EROS international have been saying that SARKAR RAJ is a hit overseas. They are the ones who have made the profit.
but yet this silly boxofficeindia site is saying something else..
EROS INTERNATIONAL STATEMENT!
Eros celebrates the box office performance of Sarkar Raj
Thursday, June 19, 2008 -
While 3rd parties are talking about the film, Pranab Kapadia of Eros who is the actual distributor for Sarkar Raj overseas has issued his own report to the media on performance of Sarkar Raj across Eros distributed areas. The following is from the distributor who actually bought the rights:
Pranab Kapadia, Distribution, Eros International on Sarkar Raj:
Sarkar Raj grosses £206,000 on UK box office in first weekend, featuring on UK Top 10 (No 9)
By doing so, in 3 days, it surpassed the entire collections of SARKAR (£176,000)
By doing so, in 3 days, it has surpassed the entire collections of 2007 films such as Aap Ka Suroor (116,000) Life in a Metro (£159,000) Honeymoon Travels (£143,000) and Shootout At Lokhandwala (£155,000) a film from a similar genre
UK audiences are not experimental in the sense that they need their formula films consisting of big stars, wedding songs, colourful designer clothes, 5 songs, high voltage emotional drama and a happy ending family film where kids will enjoy too. SARKAR RAJ defies all these norms, to break the tradition and set the path for a changing scenario, creating an opening for a film of this nature. Incidentally, films like Murder, Gangster, Ek Hasina Thi, Bheja Fry have not released theatrically in UK for commercial reasons and expenses not being covered. UK being a Yash Raj favourite supported [Yash Raj - Shahrukh Khan starrer] Chak De India only by grossing £434,000 where the film ended
As of Tuesday 17th June (12 days of film running in Cinemas) SR has grossed £342,000 with all 55 prints running in UK same as from date of launch
With effect from Fri June 20th, 33 prints of Sarkar Raj will be in circulation in mainstream UK cinemas including Top 10 Bollywood sites namely Feltham, Ilford, Starcity, Trafford, Harrow, Woodgreen, Bradford, Leicester, Southall & Blackburn. This is as per norm and similar to all Bollywood films
We are opening Berlin (Germany) from Fri 20th June
As of Tuesday 17th June, SR has grossed US$ 2.3 mn in overseas markets
Just for the record SARKAR RAJ has crossed 1 million dollars in the US.
again boxofficindia is being exposed as spreading lies..

Is Sarkar Raj a hit?
While the movie-going public is not concerned about its box-office fate after having seen the film, Bollywood trade circles are still debating over claims made by its producers and distributors that it is a “hit”.
The political thriller, featuring Bollywod icon Amitabh Bachchan along with his son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya, was directed by Ram Gopal Varma and produced by K Sera Sera and Z Picture Company.
It is rare in Bollywood that a producer and a distributor reveal their account books, but Sarkar Raj producers last week inserted an advertisement in Bollywood trade magazines, revealing the movie’s financial details.
Generally, the yardstick to judge a movie’s performance, is never known to others. Because it is never disclosed how much money has actually gone into its making and how much it has collected at the box-office.
So, the financial details of Sarkar Raj published in the trade magazine seem a bit intriguing.
As per the advertisement, Sarkar Raj, made at a cost of Rs 250 million, recovered Rs 380 million by selling its world theatrical and satellite rights to Balaji Distributors and another Rs 25 million from the sale of audio and home video rights to T-Series.
Thus, the movie accrued to the producer a profit of Rs130 million even before it was released.
Out of Rs 380 million spent for acquiring the rights of Sarkar Raj, Balaji earned Rs220 million across the table by selling the overseas rights for Rs 80 million and the satellite rights for Rs140 million.
According to the advertisement, all that Balaji needed to break even was another Rs160 million from the domestic box-office, which is projected to fetch Rs 300 million, earning it a cool profit of Rs140 million.
In the fourth of week of its run so far, Sarkar Raj has yet to touch the magic figure of Rs 160 million. It has just about earned so much as to enable the sub-distributors to earn their commission from the domestic box-office sales.
“In film parlance, Sarkar Raj can be strictly termed as ‘a commission earner’. In layman’s language, it is a semi-hit film,” Shyam Shroff of Shringar Films, a well-known Mumbai-based distribution firm, told IANS.
Comment by Rajeev on 3 July 2008:
Rizwan,
Which line in tye report given by EROS states that it has become a hit overseas????
Even your report says that the total collection would be around 9 cr.I million Dollars make it 4 cr and 342000 pounds make it approx 2.5 cr.
BOI has given a total figire of 9.5 cr.Even your reports collection is less than that of figures given by BOI.
So rizwan, what are you talking about???
Comment by rizwan on 3 July 2008:
Overseas it has made over 10crores plus
Eros paid 8 crores for the overseas rights.
How can anyone say it flopped overseas.??
If they said it is average overseas still this is incorrect but to say its FLOPPED. Makes me beleive there is defenitly a anti-bachchan lobby in india.
There is no other explanation. Maybe he didnt invite them to his sons wedding…
who knows…
Even Balaji and EROS have come up with statements that they are happy with the returns…
EVen RGV has been given another deal by BALAJI to direct a film, if this was all true. Do you really think Balaji will work with RGV ???
Its sad that in india we have people who have nothing better to do than spread lies.
Boxofficindia should be watching its back as it may be shutdown how long can you go on giving false figures…
Comment by rizwan on 3 July 2008:
I live in london and i can tell you its been a massvie HIT here from everyone that has seen it.
IN america its crossed 1million dollars. For a film with no music and which is defentitly not a family film its been a superhit.

But on Face you can’t say that is understanble, but by calling it Hit and Super Hit you are making fun of yourself. If your reports are to bebelieved a 8 crore movie collects 10 cr..then also it becomes a avg not a hit.
I went tru the IBOS site sometime back for the first time, and i tell you,its the most hillaroius site in earth.
In it Guru has collcted more than Partner and CDI.Isnt it laughable stuff. It says welcome is the highest grosser for 2007 instead of OSO.
What joke?
So rizwan,
I belive that instead of crying hoarse over here, tell your big B to retire.

And Rajeev you were busy counting all the collections of OSO and you are the one with the true accounts???
WELCOME was a blockbuster as well. Maybe that made more?? how can you prove it was OSO???
Different sites and trades have their own figures….ive been told some trade that WELCOME was actually bigger than OSO….
It is just srk-media that is telling us that OSO was the biggest hit..
I remmeber SRK giving an interview at a cricket ground when India were playing, this was 1 week after the release of OSO.
“its become the biggest hit ever in the history of indian cinema”
WHAT RUBBISH!!
NO wonder BCCI wanted to BAN him from cricket grounds. He was using a national platform to tell the country that his film was the biggest hit after 1 week? Did he really think they were stupid.
Fact of the matter was, OSO was out of cinemas after 5 weeks…

This is what indiaglitz has said
‘SARKAR RAJ took another big fall in it’s third week with collections going down by more than 60%. With only 2.5 crores more coming in, the film has seen it’s fortunes deteriorating in a rapid manner with only 33 crores to show. The film would cross the 35 crore barrier and would be termed as average at maximum. After TASHAN, SARKAR RAJ is now only the second film in the history of Bollywood which has done more than 30 crores business and has still not reached anywhere being a semi-hit, let alone a clear Hit!’
Just goes to show your Double Standards. They have not given any Verdict.
Comment by Rizwan on 3 July 2008:
Mustafa & Rajeev!
You Guys are right. I accept Defeat Sarkar Raj is Flop. I knew it in my heart, but was unable to accept it. But now I am accepting it. God Bless you that you opened my eyes.

What is a FACT is that its the 3rd BIGGEST GROSSER of 2008!!
This is one fact that boxofficeindia or any site cannot deny..
Comment by Mustafa on 3 July 2008:

The trade does not accept crap like this from Bachchans.
An interesting article this week by in trade mag Box Office. Edited by Miranis
The Sarkar Way: Is Singh Is Kinng The Biggest Hit of 2008?
There have been all sorts of claims from the makers of the flop film Sarkar Raj about how big of a hit it is and the trade is amused by the desperation. A cheeky trade watcher claimed using the Sarkar Raj system Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Kinng is the biggest blockbuster of 2008 without even being released yet.
“The reason is simple the makers have sold the 35 crore budget Singh Is Kinng for 65 crore making a 30 crore profit and Studio 18 who purchased for 65 crore have further sold all the rights for 75 crore giving 10 crore profit. This is much more than the profits of Sarkar Raj so if Sarkar is hit then Singh is Blockbuster”.
An exhibitor S. Kapur from Mumbai remarked toungue in cheek “Maybe Ram Gopal Verma and Amitabh Bachchan think that whatever does better than RGV Ki Aag is a hit. After the umpteen flops in the last few years both are desperate for success but success is achieved by hard work and good films not propaganda.”
An angry trade analyst says “Who the hell are they to judge Sarkar Raj is a hit, Ram Gopal Verma has never given a hit in his career and Amitabh Bachchan is creating records with flops, 5-6 flops a year from him are a staple diet for industry. Take Bachchan family and RGV out of the industry over last 10 years and we would have been 200 crore better off. What have they given us over last 10 years without a Yash chopra, Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan or Akshay Kumar. Nothing! From PVR to Sahara, all the distributors are crying and they believe their film is a hit, its the height of stupidity”.
Looks like the team of Sarkar Raj needs a reality check, its the public who decides a hit film not the team involved with film.

They can try as hard as they can
But
The news for them is…AB has signed a 1500crore deal with Anil Ambani. A deal that will put all these people out of business!!
1500crores is more than any of them will ever see or dream off…

Bachchans are becoming laughing stock. Everybody is laughing behind their backs. The film will be in 1/2 shows on few cinemas next week and they still going around calling a hit. Only ppl who can’t give hits get this desperate

Nothing! From PVR to Sahara, all the distributors are crying and they believe their film is a hit, its the height of stupidity
I wonder who this angry trade analyst is? Why was he scared to not to have his name mentioned.
2 things…
1) He was scared and wanted to say this without having his name mentioned
2) he does not exist

So why are you guys cribbing and crying? I love it when you keep talking endlessly about Amitabh Bachchan who gives so much botheration to all rukh rukhistas….Poor guys…
Comment by Arun on 3 July 2008:
No trade analyst wants to reveal his/her name becuase obviously no one wants to get sued for stating a blatant lie….That person knows that whole others will screw him up
