The biggest boost that films are getting today are the revenues from satellite television rights. The prices of these rights have more than doubled for the big hyped films in the last year or so.

Tashan and Sarkar Raj which are flops as far as Indian and Overseas theatrical business is concerned managed to cover their total purchase costs for YRF Films and Balaji Motion Pictures respectively via the good prices they got from the sale of satellite TV rights.

Tashan and Sarkar Raj were lucky that the satellite rights were sold before release because if they waited after release the prices fetched would be much lower as they both floped at the box office. Last year Jab We Met satellite rights were sold after release and fetched 10 crore but prior to release the figure would have much less. The timing of selling these rights can make a huge difference to the final revenue because after release the price will depend on what happened at the box office while prior to release the price will be determined by how big and hyped the film is.
