Movie Review: THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC by FENIL SETA
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is easily one of the most important and also one of the least promoted movies of the year. The shooting of the movie began without any pomp; it was completed peacefully without any controversies. Nothing happened during the shooting which was worth hitting the headlines. And therefore, audiences had least expectations from this movie. But surprisingly, the movie rocks and ranks as one the best family entertainers to hit the theatres in recent times!
The story of the movie: Ranbir Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) is a leading industrialist. He’s a loner who never got love in his life. One day while returning home from an award function, Ranbir accidentally hits another car. The occupants of the car, a couple, die on the spot. A case is filed on Ranbir. A year later, the judge declares his verdict-Ranbir will be appointed as the guardian of the couple’s four children and he will have to take care of them till they all turn 18. These four children were: 9 year old Vashisht (Akshat Chopra), 7 year olds Aditi (Shriya Sharma) and Iqbal (Rachit Sidana) and 5 year old Avantika (Ayushi Burman). Now these four orphaned children hated Ranbir since he was the responsible for their parent’s death. But they have no other option but to stay with Ranbir. Ranbir was not quite happy with the children too. Even the children felt sad staying with Ranbir and they prayed to God. God (played by Rishi Kapoor) heard them and He sends His most mischievous and lovely angel Geeta (Rani Mukherji) to earth to bring Ranbir and the children together. Will this angel succeed in her mission?
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is a wonderful film but unfortunately, has its share of flaws too. The best thing of this flick is that there’s not a single unnecessary scene. Kunal Kohli doesn’t waste time and doesn’t make the movie too dramatic or emotional and that’s why the movie remains interesting from start to finish! There’s not a single boring moment in the film. Even Saif’s lonely life was shown quickly and properly and the car accident scene is presented in the very beginning.
However, certain scenes in the first half were nonsensical. The Dominos pizza sequence was a stupid one and didn’t make any sense. The scene could have been written and described in a better way. However, things take a good turn after Rani’s entry and after she turns up at Saif’s house. From there on, the film turns into a fantastic entertainer!
The movie also has lots of messages not only for the kids but for audiences of all age groups. The scene where Rani explains about the God’s system of giving plus points is a good way of telling people to refrain from committing sins!
The climax was also wonderful. As I said earlier, Kunal Kohli doesn’t waste time and the same applies for the ending too. The climax didn’t became too emotional or melodramatic and most importantly, didn’t drag.
The film has lots of special effects and they are just outstanding! Some of them are eye-catching, especially the ones in the song ‘Beetey Kal Se’ where dinosaurs are shown dancing with Rani and the kids! Just amazing!
Saif Ali Khan was a complete natural and gave a terrific performance! From the promos, it seemed he’ll give a boring performance but surprisingly, he does an extra-ordinary job. He was marvelous in Race and Tashan too, and again he gives a great performance! Keep it up!!
Rani Mukherji does an outstanding job in the role of the angel and was completely lovable. As soon as entered the movie, the film reaches another level altogether! She’s such a charming actress and I just hope that I get to see more of her!
The four kids did a wonderful job. 3 of them were debutants and yet, Kunal Kohli managed to extract fine performances from them. Akshat Chopra did a great job as Vashisht but he was too old for his character (his character was shown to be 9 years old). And how come a 9 year old was solving chemistry problems?! Shriya Sharma, who is also seen in Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai waas good. Ayushi Burman looked cute but she hardly had anything to do. Rachit Sidana as Iqbal was terrific and does a fabulous job!
Ameesha Patel looked super hot and her role was similar to the one she played in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. She doesn’t irritate but her character lacked meat and she didn’t have much to do in the movie. Rishi Kapoor as God does a good job!
Sharat Saxena as the judge was natural. Rasaak Khan and Mahesh Thakur were wasted.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy as usual does a fabulous job! In each movie they do a great job and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is no exception! All songs were best and they were picturised beautifully! Bulbula was a unique song, depicting the life of angels! The special effects in Beetey Kal Se were a delight to watch. Lazy Lamhe was a enjoyable number and Amisha sizzled in this song. Nihaal Ho Gayi was delightful, but the best song of the lot was undoubtedly ‘Pyaar Ke Liye’. The song was a wonderful lyric (Prasoon Joshi the great!) and because of its lyrics and soulful tune, the song fits perfectly in sad as well as happy moments in the film!
Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography was amazing, especially in some scenes involving Rani. Sandeep Chowta’s background score was perfect.
Rohera Gera and Kunal Kohli did a great job in writing the story and screenplay. However, some of the scenes didn’t made sense and could had been better.
Kunal Kohli’s direction is just perfect. He brilliantly handled the film and proves that he’s a great storyteller. Even his dialogues were quite nice.
Some of the best scenes of the movie:
1. The first scene of the movie
2. The courtroom scene
3. The four kids entry in Ranbir’s house
4. The song ‘Beetey Kal Se’ and ‘Bulbula’
5. The scenes where the kids’ plan to harass Geeta backfire (funny!)
6. The scene were Geeta explains to kids about God’s plus points
7. The intermission point
8. Ranbir befriending Iqbal and Aditi
9. Ranbir breaking down in front of the kids
10. The last 15 minutes of the movie
On the whole, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic is a wonderful entertainer which should appeal not only to kids, but also to teenagers and adults. It also has a good social message which should appeal to the audiences. It’s certainly one of the best family entertainers to have hit the theatres after Taare Zameen Par and Ta Ra Rum Pum. Go, watch it with your whole family and enjoy this magical movie!
My rating-**** out of 5!

thanx for the Review Fenil but disagree at lot of places .
Movies soudntack was horrile barrinng a Parke liye ( which is used in entire film ) none can be called a good song . nihaal was just decent other were poor .
i also thought ending was too stretched the last 15 mins were totally not needed . the way vasistha changes didnt make sense to me looked hurried .
Rani looked totally uninterested in movie and thought was just following script . Saif was ok and Amisha clothes were much shorter than her role .

Samia saw the movie? Well agree with u 3 for Adults & 4 for Kids !!
Its not doing great at box office, feel sad for Rani & Kunal - Asusual Saif lacked to pull crowds inn !!
Comment by Sunder SRK on 30 June 2008:
Saif Ali Khan can’t pull the crowd, in Race just because of Kareena Kapoor, and a new pair, so, it was a lot hype. But apart from him, Rani didn’t impress, Actually if we minus Ameesha Patel’s * DRESS * then we can say that she looks really sweet and cute in good sense. But in all movie was not like YRF.
I don’t know why YRF doesn’t cast KARISHMA KAPOOR, she is ONE of the most wonderful artist, or I will like to say that to me KARISHMA KAPOOR is female SRK. And yes, Kajol too.

Boobysingh, we both always disagree it seems!!
Loved your comment Samia. Critics feel pride in criticizing a movie and giving it less than 3 rating. But I m not that type. If I loved a movie, then I have no problem in giving it 4 or higher rating.
