TV ka star kaun? SRK!

BO collections be damned, it is time to compare TRPs.

With Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan’s show having been around – competing together for two weeks now – it was time to explore who found favour on the small screen.

And if TRPs are to be believed, Salman may have given SRK a close fight but it is the King Khan who has emerged a clear winner.

According to the data disclosed by TAM Media Research, Salman’s 10 Ka Dum on Sony piped Hrithik-endorsed Junoon Kuchh Kar Dikhane Ka on NDTV Imagine and SRK’s Kya Aap Paanchvi Pas Se Tez Hain ? with 3.35 TVR on the first day. Interestingly enough, the ratings of Dum fell on the next day to 2.7 TVRs and that of Kya Aap… rose to 3.29 TVRs.

The second week saw Junoon falling to .60 per cent while Dum stood at 1.51 per cent. Shah Rukh emerged a winner with 1.62 per cent in this aMap rating. SRK’s show will go off air in July.

But is it just the star who makes all the difference or should the credit also go to the format of the show? TV insiders say while star brings the eyeballs initially, it is the format which holds the viewers.

Danish Khan, assistant vice-president, marketing, Sony, avers that although the format of the show is of utmost importance, “matching the nerve of the show with the verve of a celebrity host is the magic mantra.” He says, “Our show (Dum) is all about light-hearted questions that don’t tax the contestant’s brains. The questions needed to be asked with a lot of humour and Salman fits the bill. It wouldn’t have worked if we had an awe-inspiring presence on the sets, like that of Big B.”

Shailja Kejriwal, executive vice-president, content, NDTV Imagine concurs, “Though the star presence does lure the audience, the format of the show has to be interesting enough to bring them back week after week. Indian televiewers don’t watch the show only for the stars; they do so to see the show and the questions and appreciate others’ talents and test their knowledge. Had they been watching the shows for just the star, they may as well go and watch their films.”

Siddhartha Basu, the brain behind both Dum and Kya Aap … had clarified the issue earlier and said, “There is certainly no comparison between the two shows. Both have entirely different concepts and are targeted at different audiences. While SRK’s show is a quiz show, Salman is hosting a game show.”

As Satish Datt, director of Rock n Roll Family on another channel, reveals, it is the format that is decided first and the star comes in much later. “A show is never conceptualised keeping a star in mind. It is always the other way round. We took Ajay and Kajol to judge our show for they fit our format.”

    TV Specials

Seems like its the end of the road for Shahrukh Khan’s Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai as insiders says the current season might be the last for the show. Star Plus had expected it to be the next biggest thing on Indian Television after Kaun Banega Crorepati. The TRPs for the show have been nowhere close to Kaun Banega Crorepati in its first season hosted by Amitabh Bachchan.

Industry experts believed launching the game show during the IPL season hurt it in the initial phase. But even with the end of the IPL the TRPs have show no signs of improvement. Also too many celebrity episodes haven’t helped the cause as the normal episodes in the show tend be over shadowed by celebrity ones. SRK’s divided interest during the IPL made thinks worst for the show.

Shahrukh had an initial contract for 52 episodes out of which 36 episodes have been shot. These are the ones that will be telecast. SRK will be released from contract of shooting the rest 16 episodes.

  10. Mustafa please help me, im trying to find PANCHVI FAIL on this list…

  12. Rizwan n Javed

for you kind information KAPPS was suppose to be 36 episodes from the time SRK had signed the contract….if you can find all the negative info about so easily so why dont you try to look for the truth first and then say it….i am a big SRK fan so i read everything about him even before he starts doing that particular thing…and i remember reading an article before even KAPPS started saying that it will be for 36 episodes only…

  13. Rizwan/javed

and why are you dragging the issue of this article to panchvi beinf hit or flop??? this article is not talking about the ratings from the first day of KAPPS…its talking about the TRPs of the three shows running on tv at the same time…that is salman’s dus ka dum, hrithik’s junoon, and SRK’s KAPPS…and it clearly states that KAPPS ratings are higheir than the other two shows…so plzzzzzzzzzzz dont drage the topic to something else…

  14. King of contests: SRK show tops TRP charts
By far on June 8th, 2008

Times: So has television finally laid rest to the question - who is the biggest star? In a clash between Bollywood biggies, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, it is SRK whose game show Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? that appears to be doing better, according to snap polls done by aMap in six metros.

The overnight audience measurement agency, aMap, has suggested that while Roshan attracted an average television rating of 0.82% for his music-based contest Junoon - Kuch Kar Dikhane Ka , Salman’s Das Ka Dum (DKD) could only garner a TRP of 1.65%.

Both were launched on June 6 after much hype and promotion. DKD promises an astounding cash prize of Rs 10 crore besides getting to watch Salman dance to his favourite numbers on the set.

Junoon , on the other hand, is a music show for which Roshan is a “goodwill ambassador”. However, SRK is not nicknamed King Khan for nothing.

His show Kya Aap… - that was launched on April 25 - got off to a better start. The quiz show enjoyed a TRP of 2.7 on the first day.

The show that evaluates the participant’s knowledge on information that a fifth class student knows, has dipped in popularity since its launch. Industry experts have blamed the low ratings to the IPL season that consumed public interest earning TRPs of 7 or 8.

Even in its peak rating, the Indian version of Are you Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? has beaten both Salman Khan and Roshan with a peak rating of 3.5%. DKD had a peak rating of 2.6 while Junoon barely managed a rating of 1.1.

Incidentally, Kaun Banega Crorepati 3 - another show hosted by SRK last year - did better than the three that are currently running. While its average rating was 3.4%, it had a peak rating of 4.9%.

now u should go and buy a ticket and watch sr from becoming the disaster

javed, rizwan rather than typing nonsense and fake news here go baby by a ticket of sr and make it a below avg movie

  15. PANCHVI PASS IS ANOTHER HIT SHOW FROM SRK SO CHEERS SRK FANS CHEERS

  16. One Slap after another Slap for Amitabh Bachchan Fans. Paanchvi Pas is yet another Hit for Shah Rukh Khan, while Sarkar Raj is yet another Flop of Amitabh Bachchan be it in India or Overseas.

  17. They are pulling out Paanchvi Pass from TV after all the episodes which have already been shot. They are not making any new. Who says ‘Hakla’ is TV or film star.

  18. sunil

    Jai,
If Panchwi pass was hit, why is it shutting down now? It proves taht its biggest flop show ever that it will be shut now. What a slap on SRK and his fans face. SRK should now get used to his failures. I remember he used to say before starting of the show, that the show will be hit. Ab kya hua? SRK ki bolti bandh….hahahaha. Its a sad news for SRK fans. Atleast now they can’t argue. Good show Sunil, keep it up.

  24. I think Big B’s yeast inflection dance from JBJ clinched him his award. Those delicate hip movements just were too much to ignore.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has emerged as the sexiest Asian man in the world in 2007, according to a list published by a weekly newspaper here.

Eastern eye, a leading British-Asian paper, says last year’s winner Abhishek Bachchan was relegated to the fourth position this year. Hrithik Roshan came second followed by John Abraham.

It is the first time the 42-year-old actor has topped the list in its three-year history. The first-ever winner was Abraham.

The top ten were: 1) Shah Rukh Khan, 2) Hrithik Roshan, 3) John Abraham, 4) Abhishek Bhachchan, 5) Upen Patel, 6) Aamir Khan, 7) Salman Khan, 8) Ali Zafar, 9) Jay Sean and 10) Saif Ali Khan.

British Asians on the list include Patel, Jay Sean, cricketer mark Ramprakash (13) and footballer Michael Chopra (25).

On being named the sexiest man on the planet, Khan told Eastern Eye: “Me, really? Thanks. I feel too sexy to talk to anyone now!

“I never thought I would be called a sexy guy or be put into that category. It’s only because I carry myself the way I am comfortable - that is what is sexy, I think?”

Hamant Varma, Editor of Eastern Eye and founder of Sexiest Asian men list and Sexiest Asian women list said: “Shah Rukh Khan is the complete package, good actor, good dancer, good looking and a showman. He is a great ambassador for India.”

  50. Fortunes change every Friday. It is time to go beyond proclamations, claims, retorts and diatribe. The BO burrow is where all false gods falter. Fly-day or Fry-day..? It depends on which end of the Six Pack chart you are!

In ‘Sarkar Raj’, we see the emergence of Bachchan II. Small B has, finally, stepped into the shoes of Angry Young Man. The junior never for once flinches in the presence of his mighty dad. Nor is he overshadowed by his charming wife. Abhishek Bachchan, as Shankar Nagre, is one for the textbook.

The screenplay of ‘Sarkar Raj’, which is low on dialogue, poses a challenge to all actors concerned. Abhishek gets over this hurdle with admirable ease. He internalises the character, delivers a controlled performance, and proves once again that he is invincible. On his day, that is!

The net collection for Sarkar Raj stands at Rs. 20,40,14,150 at the end of Week 1 at the Indian Box-office. It has also taken a record-breaking initial overseas.

Strength: The Terrific (Bachchan) Trio, Stunning climactic twist

    Weakness: Screen lag! Weak premise.

    Box-office verdict: Hit

  52. Sarkar Raj

Adlab, Z Picture Company and K Sera Sera’s Ramgopal Varma directed and much awaited sequel to SARKAR, the three Bachchan starrer, SARKAR RAJ, was one of the most (if not the most) awaited releases of the first half of 2008. The film had a fair first day in Bombay and South but the opening was by and large disappointing at many places. However, the film picked up quite well as the weekend progressed and Sunday saw quite a good turnout at many cinemas. Unfortunately, SARKAR RAJ has not been appreciated much outside Bombay circuit (barring Hyderabad and Calcutta) and its collections began to drop from Monday onwards, even in Maharashtra. Considering the heavy prices at which it has been sold, SARKAR RAJ’s final outcome will depend on its performance in the coming weeks. Checking out the first week numbers, SARKAR RAJ collected 4.80 crores from Bombay, 1.40 crores from Ahmedabad, 2.45 lakhs from Mehsana, 1.75 lakhs from Patan, 1.25 lakhs from Palanpur, 2.10 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 16.70 lakhs from Rajkot, 6 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.85 lakhs from Bhavnagar,1.15 lakhs from Porbandar, 1.25 lakhs from Bhuj, 3.10 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.40 lakhs from Adipur, 7 lakhs from Solapur, 14.20 lakhs from Nasik, 2.40 crores from Delhi city, 40 lakhs from Noida, 32.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 11.40 lakhs from Kanpur, 33 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.65 lakhs from Agra, 5.40 lakhs from Meerut, 3.65 lakhs from Moradabad, 2 lakhs from Bareilly, 4 lakhs from Aligarh, 63.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16.40 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.90 lakhs from Panipat, 1.05 crores from Calcutta, 3.05 lakhs from Guwahati, 29.20 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.50 lakhs from Amravati, 2.20 lakhs from Akola, 30 lakhs from Indore, 2.30 lakhs (gross) from Ajmer, 3.60 lakhs from Bikaner, 28.70 lakhs from Jaipur, 1 crore from Hyderabad and 5.70 lakhs from Aurangabad. During the week, the Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer managed a fairly decent 23.85 crores from India and another reasonable week may see it sail through to safety, especially in Bombay and parts of South. Unfortunately, SARKAR RAJ crashed heavily in the Overseas (around 70-72 percent) during the second weekend. The film grossed $833,005 in the US and $605,289 in the UK. Given the fact that EROS International has procured the rights for 7-8 crores, even recovery looks difficult.

Box Office Status: Flop in Overseas and might reach Below Average in India

  53. Jaanat

Vishesh Films’ Kunal Deshmukh directed, Emraan-Sonal starrer, JANNAT, continued its heavenly run, though now on the lower side. During the week, JANNAT collected 13 lakhs from Bombay, 11 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.35 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.05 lakhs from Jamnagar, 14.50 lakhs from Delhi, 2 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 5 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.35 lakhs from Agra, 1 lakh (approx) each from Aligarh, Moradabad and Faridabad, 3 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4.15 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.10 lakh from Indore, 1.20 lakhs from Bhopal, 5.30 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.25 lakhs from Ajmer, 8.20 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.50 lakhs from Aurangabad. Adding another 2 crores, JANNAT crosses TASHAN and has so far netted an impressive 32 crores (for its price) in five weeks from India. JANNAT is the year’s biggest success and a genuine super-hit. The film has also done decently in the UK, grossing $302, 34.

Box Office Status: Super Hit in India & Semi-Hit in Overseas

Mixed bag!- By Taran Adarsh, June 18, 2008 - 08:59 IST

MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP has had a mediocre start in U.K. In view of the fact that the film was released on 30 + screens, it should’ve ideally grossed £ 1,50,000 + in its opening weekend [incl. previews on Thursday night]… SUMMER 2007 is a debacle in U.K.; the opening weekend numbers are pathetic… DASAVATHARAM [Tamil film] has fetched a superb start in U.K., surpassing all Hindi films running there… SARKAR RAJ has dropped drastically in the three major markets — U.K. [drop: 72%], U.S.A. [drop: 73.8%] and Australia [drop: 75.1%]

    BoxofficeIndia.com

Mere Baap Pehle Aap is fair in the overseas market against its costs and opened to a decent response in UK and Middle East. The three day total is 2.25 crore with UK contributing 85 lakhs, UAE adding 60 lakhs and North America grossing 50 lakhs.

Sarkar Raj fell in week two and now will not cover its costs for its International distributor Eros International. The 10 day total is 8.75 crore with 2.50 crore coming from UK, 3.50 crore from North America and the rest of the world adding 2.75 crore. The film is likely to finish at around 9.50 crore business from overseas markets. FLOP

While its average rating was 3.4%, it had a peak rating of 4.9%..

Shah Rukh took Amitabh’s leftovers from Star

An Indian newspaper has reported that Shah Rukh Khan was not the first choice for anchoring new game-show ‘Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain?’.

Shah Rukh was only offered the position after fellow Bollywood actor and screen legend Amitabh Bachchan refused it because ‘he did not like the concept’. Says a source, “Bachchan was the first choice for Paanchvi Paas… but after he declined the offer, SRK was approached for it.”

Big B confirmed that Star Plus had come to him with Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? He said, “Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain? was discussed with me by Star as one of the possible shows they wanted me to do. We are still talking about what we can do together. We are discussing more ideas and sample shows.”

That proves that srill BIG B is first choice….HAHHAHA

  63. ARUN WAT WOULD U SAY ABT THIS ARTICLE HE HE

  67. Mr. Arun!

At least Shah Rukh Khan has the Guts to accept that His Game Show KAPPSTH TRP’S is not Good, but what Amitabh Bachchan He doesn’t have Guts at all to accept that Sarkar Raj is Flop. Instead of remaining quite that Sarkar Raj is Flop, He is shouting that Sarkar Raj is Hit. That is how Big Besharam Amitabh Bachchan is.

Instead of asking why KAPPSTH TRP’S is low in His Blog, He should ask why people didn’t watched Sarkar Raj. That will make more sense. Al least in future He will know what style of Movie people except of Him, so that He can work on that. By asking why KAPPSTH TRP’S is low, he will gain nothing.

  68. Shahrukh had an initial contract for 52 episodes out of which 36 episodes have been shot. These are the ones that will be telecast. SRK will be released from contract of shooting the rest 16 episodes. The producers are planning to launch a different game show with Shahrukh early next year.

    ——————————————————————————–
    ‘Paanchvi Pass’ pass nahin

With Shah Rukh Khan, both Siddharth Basu of Synergy Adlabs and STAR were confident of the cult following that ‘Paanchvi Pass’ would generate. They were hoping to recreate the magic of ‘KBC’. And so confident they were that they launched the game show during the IPL extravaganza.

Blunder No.1. For a cricket starved nation, a game show is just a filler during the advertisements. ‘Paanchvi Pass’ was unveiled in April when the IPL - Twenty-20 mania had just about kicked in. It was the clash of the titans. Other channels shied away from unveiling new shows and more or less stuck to their tried and tested soaps. But Star decided to take a gamble and launch ‘Paanchvi Pass’. They were hoping to cash in on the SRK mania.SRK did voice his dissent. Juggling between promoting his Kolkata Knight Riders and his back to back commitments with Star did leave him a little sore.

We had reported earlier that King Khan wasn’t keen on kick starting ‘Paanchvi Pass’ because he felt that there would be a clash of interests, but Star wanted to cash in on his onscreen magnetism.

A game show is a fantastic concept. Edu-entertainment is the new TRP churner, but a regular diet does tend to make it a tad boring. And that is exactly what happened with the show. The SRK magnetism refused to hold the show together. TRP’s dropped to an abysmal level. Slowly, the audience shifted loyalties to the IPL. And when they had enough and more of cricket, they decided to watch Salman Khan perform his antics…that was a novelty because by then Shah Rukh was old news.

To give our King Khan credit, he did try to pull back the TRP’s with celeb power. But the TRP’s still continued to stick to a dismal 2 to 2.6 percent. From SRK loyalists - KJo and Rani Mukherji to our Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav - the show refused to make the climb on the charts. Even though the channel has SRK’s dates for 52 episodes, they have decided to stick to the original contract of 36 episodes and pull it off air after that.

Are we going to see Season II in the near future? Siddharth Basu, on a defensive note, said, ” That is a call that the channel would need to take.” The channel seemed to pussy foot around questions and refused to comment. Our close source however managed to slip it in that, “there are talks of replacing it with another show. Non-fiction or fiction is still being worked on.”

And our bets are hedged on the ‘Mahabharatha’, Star Plus’s magnum opus. With 9X gunning for an August release, Star Plus is feeling the heat and may decide to slot their Mahabharatha in the same time slot as ‘Paanchvi Pass’. There are a couple of daily soaps in the pipeline, but they would need a strong show to retain their prime time slot.

  71. Jai & Mustafa,

Both KBC3 and Paanchvi Paas could hardly complete 3 months on TV, whereas BIG B’s KBC was on for more than 2 years, which clearly shows that Shahrukh or anyone else in the Universe can never ever match his popularity. BIG Bare the biggest Super Star of the two milleniums.

  72. Amitabh didn’t had Films, that is why He did for 2 years. While Shah Rukh Khan had Films which is the main difference.

  73. Super Star of Millenium doesn’t have Solo Blockbuster which goes to show that some terms are considered Jokes for Media.

The show opened with 12.3 TVRs and for the first week it delivered an average TRP of 9.7. For the second week, according to TAM Media Research data, KBC got an average TRP of 9.1. In comparison KBC 2 which was a weekend show had opened with 19.75 TVRs and reached 18 million individuals.

“These are historic numbers,” says Star India’s Vice-president Ajay Vidyasagar. “In the history of satellite television in India no show has delivered such eyeballs and achieved such widespread reach in just two weeks.” Vidyasagar says KBC 3 is a much bigger success and apart from the content the Shah Rukh Khan factor has clearly swayed the mass audience in its favour. “It is a sign of good content winning, maturing of audience in the cable & satellite homes and the increased reach of satellite television besides of course SRK effect which is showing clear signs of picking up further in coming weeks. People are beginning to love him for his warm, breezy, funny and tongue-in-cheek humour and style of anchoring,” says Vidyasagar.

What’s more, in two weeks spread over eight episodes, KBC has also racked in Rs. 24 crores in advertising revenue. Besides raking in mega bucks in ad sales, the show has also taken STAR Plus’ 9 to 10 pm slot to a new high. Before the launch of KBC it was a neck-to-neck fight between STAR Plus and Zee in the 9 to 10 pm slot with STAR’s channel share at 17 per cent against Zee’s 16 per cent. In two weeks the game show has helped the channel increase its share from 17 to 31 per cent while Zee’s share has gone down to 14 per cent.

Ever since the first week’s TRP figures were released by TAM on Friday last week, there has been a constant comparison between SRK’s KBC and that of Bachchan’s KBC 1 and KBC 2. The comparison is clearly aimed at gauging whether SRK’s KBC is a hit or flop over that of Bachchan’s two seasons. But such a comparison is not only unfair but also unjustified simply because the whole market reality and reach of satellite television has undergone a sea change in the past seven years.

Much water has flown under the bridge between July 2000 when the first edition of the show was launched and January 2007 when the third season of the show with SRK opened. To understand the TRP numbers in proper perspective one needs to understand the cable and satellite television’s growth in terms of reach, market, audience profile and time spent on show/s as well as the changes in the size of the sample size, geographical spread and methodology used by TAM to calculate TRP numbers.

For instance, between 1997 and 2002 the panel size (number of PeopleMeters) was 3200 but post- National Readership Survey (NRS) 2002, the panel size was increased to 4800 covering all cities, regions and towns with one lakh-plus population. Post-NRS 2005 which had thrown up drastic changes in market reality, the panel size has been increased to 7000 PeopleMeters, covering 151 cities from the earlier 73.

In 2000 there were 25 million cable and satellite homes. KBC 1 which opened with 10.7 TVRs was watched by about nine million viewers. In 2005 there were 45 million cable and satellite homes and KBC 2 reached 18 million viewers in the opening week. Today there are 65 million cable and satellite homes and KBC reached 37 million viewers in the first week and 47 million in the second week. “There is no denying that KBC 3 has got more eyeballs but that’s also because the reach of satellite television has increased substantially, nearly three times the number in 2000,” says TAM Media Research’s Corporate Communication Manager Siddhartha Mukherji.

According to Mukherji, comparison is based on individual perception. “Comparison was bound to happen because KBC was synonymous with Bachchan. The first week was a testing time for Shah Rukh. It took him some time to warm up and connect with viewers who were used to watching Bachchan as the host,” says Mukherji. “But the industry was interested in knowing how SRK’s KBC opened and whether it is a hit or flop. There are 100 factors that determine TRPs which in turn determine the fate of a show and one week is too short a time to pass a definite verdict. But people were in a hurry to judge it.” TRPs, according to Siddhartha, are determined by reach and time spent. “But there is no doubt that KBC has reached more viewers,” he adds. Thus when it comes to getting eyeballs KBC 3 has scored a clear victory over the previous two seasons of the show.

  79. The badshah of Bollywood — Shahrukh Khan — will once again be seen on the small screen as he gets back on the tube to host the season four of KBC.

It is time again to sharpen your general knowledge and get ready to take the hot seat for the next season of KBC. At the Global Indian Television Honours, after Shahrukh Khan walked away with the award for the Best Talk show, it seems quiet natural that he host the next season too.

Siddharth Basu, the man behind KBC, who walked away with an award for his dance show ‘Jhalak Dikjla Ja’ says: “Synergy Adlabs had entered into a contract with Star Television for five KBC seasons last year. We have atleast four seasons remaining. According to the agreement, SRK will feature in the season four.”

Basu, who is thrilled with his success as Synergy Adlabs won two awards this year says, “I am pleased that Synergy Adlabs has got two awards, one for third season of ‘KBC’ and the other for ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’ for the first season.”

It’s surely a good news for all avid TV watchers as they will get a chance to witness Shahrukh’s charismatic performance in KBC for yet another year as the charming actor will keep the viewers glued to the television screen.

From dancing with the stars to quizzing with the Badshah of Bollywood, Siddharth Basu certainly has his hands full.
