The Clear Picture on Amitabh Bachchan So Called Super Stardom

I am not a SRK fan but all i can say is that Bachchan was not the star he is made out to be. I have a lot of proof with trade mags which i will provide at some time.
The first thing i would like to say is that before Amitabh entered film industry it was a family but manipulation started with Bachchan. The problem is people like me know what happened becuase we were there but what comes out after the event is not like it was.
Here is an actual glace of Bachchan’ career.
1968
Bachchan cannot make much headway in the industry so his mother asks Indira Gandhi for help the saying that her son is adamant at being a film hero but due to his looks nobody is giving him a channce. Indira goes to Dutt saab (Sunil) to see if he can do anything. Dutt Saab and Nargis are closest to Indira in film industry. Dutt saab does not have anything but he can’t say no to Indira Gandhi. He gives Bachchan a role in Reshma aur Shera. There are problems as Bachchan wants Vinod Khanna’s role but Vinod is doing Dutt Saab’s Man Ka Meet and is a favourite for him. Bachchan is relegated to the background with a role of a dumb mute but he he is now in contact with the right people and roles are coming. The roles are mainly in small films or side roles.
1969
His first release Saat Hindustani is low key.
Somehow he manages to get Anand which stars superstar Rajesh Khanna. Its a small role but a film with Kaka means in the limelight.
1970
Anand releases and does well. Its Kaka’s film but Bachchan is noticed.
1971
Dutt saab suffers big loses with Reshma aur Shera, Bachchans first film as hero Pyar Ki Kahani is a disaster, his next where he plays second lead to Navin Nishcol Parwana also does not make impact. Mehmood’s Bombay To Goa does better but does nothing for Bachchan’s career as he just does not look hero material.
1972
Sanjog, Bansi Birju, Ek nazar Raaste Ka Pathar bite the dust and how. Its pack up time.
Now Prakash Mehra and Dharamji are making a film called Samadhi. Dharamji has a script with him by Salim Javed which he wants Prakash Mehra to direct, both are very busy and give it six months to start the movie. Six months later Dharamji is doing a film called Yaadon Ki Baraat which he feels is similar to the Salim Javed scripted one so Dharamji tells Mehra who loves the script to take the script from him and make it with someone else. Prakash Mehra approaches Raaj Kumar and Dev Saab but they refuse. Mehra is in a fix when Pran Saab tells him about this lambu hero who is looking for work. Mehra is not too confident but with a good word from Pran saab, Hrishikeshda and Indira Gandhi, Mehra goes ahead and launches Zanjeer in Nov 1972, it is to be a quickie.
1973
Zanjeer is made quickly and it releases in May 1973 and after a slow start it is a hit. This is where everyone believes Bachchan became a superstar but it was nothing like that. What Zanjeer did was give him a life line. Two months later his Bande Haath bit the dust without an opening. Zanjeer was forgotten. Bachchan was not a star yet let alone superstar. Bachchan knows Zanjeer has given him a chance and he needs to consolidate. Around October 73 the Sippy’s are making a very big film with Dharamji and are looking at Shatru bhai for the supporting role. Now Dharamji is fond of Shatru bhai but Bachchan goes to Dharamji and asks him to put in a recommendation for him to the Sippys fully well knowing that Shatru is candidate No1. Dharamji puts in a recommendation for Bachchan and Sippy’s are not going to refuse Dharamji. Its only later that Shatru Bhai tells Dharamji that he was in the running for the role and Dharamji tells him if he knew that he would never have got Bachchan the role.
But Bachchan is on cloud nine, he is in Sholay and Salim Javed are accepting Bachchan for their films. He has it made and offers come from Gulshan Rai (Deewaar), B R Chopra (Zameer), Manoj Kumar (Roti Kapada Aur Makaan) and others.
The box office is still not being kind. Gehri Chaal(second lead) and Saudagar flop. Abhimaan does average business. Namak Haraam also does okay. Now the media would like to believe this is where Bachchan toppled Kaka but it was nothing like that. No doubt Bachchan was appreciated in the role but this was not the Kaka of Anand, Kaka was gone earlier with flop after flop (Maalik, Raja Rani, Mehboob Ki Mehndi, etc). Kaka had already been toppled by Dharamji so there was no question of Bachchan toppling Kaka and becoming the No1.
Media believes Zanjeer made Bachchan No1 but it was nothing like that. At the end of 73 Dharmji, Kaka, Panditji (Manoj), Jeetu bhai, Dutt Saab, Dev Saab, Chintu (Rishi) and others were all bigger then him. Alos you had the white horse Yusuf saab (Dilip Kumar) who was in self imposed exile.
Bachchan’s biggest strike was to somehow get into Sholay and this made other makers look at him because after Dharamji and Dutt saab he was the only choice for action roles as all the rest were more romantic types.
Tired writing now and will do some more in the next few days. Look out for.
1. Bachchan wanted superstar tag after Deewaar and went for kill but fell flat on his face
2. One of his biggest hits Muqqadar Ka Sikander failed to get opening in places.
3. Ramraj Nahta and B.K Adarsh the men who helped Bachchan the most.
4. Losing many battles with same day releases with contemparies.
5. Bachchan was never off media he was off Stardust which led to support from the other magazines.
6. Prakash Mehra and Manmohan Desai nearly come to blows with Naseeb and Laawaris

But hey, when the whole world could not stop Bachchan for last 40 yrs, i think u r already late now in pulling him down and even if u post 1000 posts on BIG B, he is till going to rise higher and higher. SO more u pull him, more highe he will rise. That’s what has happened in earlier times also. So grow up u blokes. I always belive ,BIG B wasa superstar from 1975 to 1985.Not before ,not after.
His run was for 10 years.
Secondly he never shunned the media except Stardust.All the talk about BIG B is made without media is bullshit.

Just a little snippet of whats to come.
In 1982 Bachchan was at his so called peak but two films released on the same day. Both were social films, one had Bachchan and the other starred Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee.

Rajeev the problem after the times, a lot of things change.
Like we know that Devdas and Kal Ho Na Ho are not huge hits but the way media talks in 10 years ppl will remember them as blockbusters.
This also happened a lot with Bachchan films. In his career he had only two real blockbusters in Sholay and Roti Kapada aur Makaan. By real i mean every circuit. From 75-78 there was no difference between Dharmji and Bachchan and from 82-85 Jeetu was his equal, it was only 78-82 when he had clean rule and that was mainly because Dharamji cut down on his work to concentrate on Sunny’s launch in the late 70,s

I really pitty you guys. You people are fighting over SRK vs. AB like some teenagers. This web site has become pathetic, I think I shall stop visiting it anymore. Most of the posts here seems propaganda against Bachchans. I agree with Arun that if no one could stop AB for 40 years, these stupid and childish acts are gonna doing nothing to his stardum. Please grow up and stop these childish acts. I am not a fan of Bachchan or SRK. I am only fan of good films, good acting and so. The way you guys are overwhelmed by SRK, I wonder only people in their childhood/teenage go to this extent, i.e., being in love with “heros” rather than their acting/telent etc. I really doubt the age group of guys posting here, it seems as if I am on some forum for teenagers. But i got disguted with his repeated act stupidity in public life and posing himself as a superstar(Which he is not at this moment)

I believe here we are discussing SR and not Bachchans. I am not a fan of Big B, I truly hated him in a number of films recently, Aag, Nishabd, KANK, etc (btw tell me one actor who did not do mistakes, did’nt SRK did many?, perhaps most of his career is a mistake after DDLJ, doing all these stupid loverboy masalah movies). But to be honest I liked SR very very much, it is a fabulous movie in all respects. And this is what we are discussing here, not the Big B/Bachchans or their true or fake stardom etc. And both Big B and Abhishek were absolutely outstanding in SR, that’s it.

You can’t compare 80s superstar with late 90s superstar. at the age of more than 60 and about 40 year of career in Film Industry Big B is still in Demand. Shahrukh will not have the same charisma till that time. 100% sure. You can’t compare otherwise Big B is a MahaNayak of Indian Cinema. I don’t see reviews of other films by so many people. Why is it that almost everyone wants to review BiG B’s films viz Sarkar Raj…This is because they want themselves to be associated with him in every which way. And those who are anti-BIG B want to pull him down becuase they feel threatened by his presence and burn with jelaousy that still at age 66, he is being compared with today’s superstars.
Let us measure sharukhs performance when he does no of film equivalent to Amitabh.

At amitabh time film was considered hit when it will do silver jubilee. Today Film is superhit before release as hit is considered on total earnings not on viewership.
And above all You can not deny Greatness to Bradman , because you have Sachin Today.
In fact most of the data is absolutely misleading. I had seen many movies of Amitabh & so many movies where i was not able to get tickets are dubbed by you as average, which is ridiculous.
If Shahrukh is so great why he is trying to copy every act of Amitabh?
Amitabh has proven himself to be an artist first, then a star or superstar if you so wish! SRK may have been labelled a star/superstar/king, etc but he is still to prove himself as an artist in the true sense of the word. Dilip was in a class of his own, so is amitabh. I guess SRK was fortunate to have come at a time when there was very little competition and with just the right ‘formular’ for that time. This earned him his little spot in the sun. So Amitabh fans let ‘King Khan’ be.

If you mean Don then it is called tribute not copy (for Amitabh Fans it got wrong and for SRK fans it proved right). As for KBC when Amitabh was Dropped Shah Rukh Khan was signed, so that is not copy as well. So for what thing you are calling copy.

Purely on acting skills its AB all the way from folk, village guy, suave and sophisticated, villaneous, you name it he has managed to pull of all the roles CONVINCINGLY. Thats the true calibre of an actor. The very fact that he is still around and going strong is AMAZING. The very fact that people still remember and adore him (young or old, boys or girls) and want to watch him is AMAZING. How many actually remember say a Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor,Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Mithun. Its Amitabh who is still going strong. In SRK’s time, lets also not forget its not SRK alone the real toughies are Aamir, Akshay Kumar, Salman, Saif who are doing very good in India and abroad going by the Box Office. But then Amitabh is Vintage, watch him, relax and enjoy those tremendous acting skills. The voice, presentation, personality the tremendous screen presence, and most importantly the DIALOGUE DELIVERY,ahem no one comes close. The very fact that Iam writing so much and so many are writing about him comparing him with the newest breeds, is indeed a compliment to him and already makes him the best. Because you compare others only to the best. The very fact we are comparing others like SRK with AB, makes AB the best and not vice versa. Let the debate continue, it will only make good for AB. He is the star of the millenium right, I am sure thats not for nothing.

From 1 till 10 in Overseas Shah Rukh Khan is. There is no competition for him in Overseas. All The 5 All Time Blockbusters in Overseas Belong to Shah Rukh Khan. On Shah Rukh Khan what he needs to prove?
He started His career unconventially with Deewana which was a Supporting role. Then He did Anit Hero in Baazigar and Darr and won hearts. When he was successful he changed his image and moved to Romantic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Here he consolidated his position in Roamntic Pardes, Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Hota Hai. He also expremented with Hey! Ram which got lot of critical appreciation. With Baadshah and Josh he showed he was willing to exprement. The Big test came in form of Mohabbatein where for 1st time He was acting with Amitabh and inspite of his role been small than amitabh He overshadowed him and he won most prestigious Filmfare for that Critic Best Actor. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham showed that in crowd he can stand out. As producer Asoka was a big risk and it paid off as it got critical appreciation and after laagan best reviewed movie that year. Devdas was the biggest risk a role made memorable by Dilip Kumae inspite of that He did that role and won all Best Actor Awards + tremendous international acclaim. Kal Ho Naa Ho and Chalte Chalte showed his box office power. With Main Hoon Naa he changed his image and moved to action in commercial format and the result was Super Hit. Veer - Zaara and Swades showed what an actor he is. Don and KBC were other big risk which he passed with flying colours. While Chak De! With a tailor made role in a relatively well made movie, Big B failed to save Ek Ajnabee from flopping at the box office. Whereas with the whole world and the media on behalf of Big B trying to sabotage him. With a major movie, J-E-M as a head on competition, SRK still managed to make Don a major hit.

In January 1975 Deewaar was released and declared hit and Bachchan got praise and here some started calling him next superstar.
He probably believed this and a solo hero film was completed quickly which was to put this superstar issue to end and released it in March. But dreams were dreams and this film floped in first week.
Any guesses which film?
After this fiasco film it was again Dharmji who helped Bachchan out of this as Bachchan got second lead hits in Sholay (Aug 1975) and Chupke Chupke (Nov 1975)

Also SRK fans and Bachchan fans can fight but both Bachchan and SRK are no match for Yusuf Saab. He is the real god.
60 films just 12 flops 27 films hit or better while the rest were average successes.
Bachchan has more flops in last three years and i think SRK has more than 12 flops in his career which is just 15 years old.
What SRK has done between 2002-2008 is what Dilip Kumar did in his whole career. Hardly gave a flop.
Amitabh at his peak but Yusaaf Saab always gave the bigger hit be it Kranti versus Naseeb/Lawaaris. Vidhaata v Namak Halaal. Karma v Aakhree Rasta or Saudagar v Hum.

SRK and Bachchan are fighting for number two place in history. Dilip Kumar is clear leader.
SRK has small chance of ending his career has biggest star ever if he has extraordinary 10-15 years from now.
Bachchan has no chance because he has messed everything up in last 10 years with 80% of his films flopping.
Bachchan success ratio at the end of 86 was about 70% now its down to 50%.

Amitabh entire Solo Filmography cann’t be matched to Shah Rukh Khan 3 Great Movies DDLJ, CDI & DEVDAS.
As for Performances Amitabh entire career performances are no match to 3 great performances CDI, SWADES & DEVDAS.
Forget that it is also no match for Vaastav, Satya, Rangeela, etc.
Amitabh is usless. That is final Arun. Don’t waste our time.
