Bollywood box-office report of the week

Coming Friday Releases

This Friday will see multiple releases in the form of Pahlaj Nihalani’s KHUSHBOO, the Aftab, Ritesh and Ayesha starrer DE TAALI and Kumar Mangat’s Anil Devgan directed Amita, Nakuul and Adhyayan starrer, HAAL-E-DIL. It appears that from the bunch, it will be the fun laden DE TAALI and well made youthful romance HAA-E-DIL that will fight it out for supremacy.

Summer 2007

The second release (in less than a month) of Anupam and Kiron Kher’s son, Sikandar Kher, turned out to be another disappointment. Though the film deserves tax exemption in Maharashtra, it had a poor start in Bombay and the opening was terribly dull everywhere. The film will fail to generate any heat at the box-office.

Box Office Status: Flop

Mere Baap Phele Aap

MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP, the makers have gone in for a big release, especially in Bombay-Thane, with almost 85 prints, but the opening was dull there. By and large the opening was weak almost everywhere. However, the positive thing is that the Om Puri, Akshaye, Paresh and Genelia starrer picked up quite well on Saturday and especially Sunday, and MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP had a satisfactory weekend. Given the reasonable selling prices the film may just about sail through. MERE BAAP PEHLE AAP has had a decent start (given the star cast and costs) in the Overseas, grossing $199,469 from UK and $113,576 from the US.

Box Office Status: Awaited

Sarkar Raj

Adlab, Z Picture Company and K Sera Sera’s Ramgopal Varma directed and much awaited sequel to SARKAR, the three Bachchan starrer, SARKAR RAJ, was one of the most (if not the most) awaited releases of the first half of 2008. The film had a fair first day in Bombay and South but the opening was by and large disappointing at many places. However, the film picked up quite well as the weekend progressed and Sunday saw quite a good turnout at many cinemas. Unfortunately, SARKAR RAJ has not been appreciated much outside Bombay circuit (barring Hyderabad and Calcutta) and its collections began to drop from Monday onwards, even in Maharashtra. Considering the heavy prices at which it has been sold, SARKAR RAJ’s final outcome will depend on its performance in the coming weeks. Checking out the first week numbers, SARKAR RAJ collected 4.80 crores from Bombay, 1.40 crores from Ahmedabad, 2.45 lakhs from Mehsana, 1.75 lakhs from Patan, 1.25 lakhs from Palanpur, 2.10 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 16.70 lakhs from Rajkot, 6 lakhs from Jamnagar, 5.85 lakhs from Bhavnagar,1.15 lakhs from Porbandar, 1.25 lakhs from Bhuj, 3.10 lakhs from Gandhidham, 1.40 lakhs from Adipur, 7 lakhs from Solapur, 14.20 lakhs from Nasik, 2.40 crores from Delhi city, 40 lakhs from Noida, 32.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 11.40 lakhs from Kanpur, 33 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.65 lakhs from Agra, 5.40 lakhs from Meerut, 3.65 lakhs from Moradabad, 2 lakhs from Bareilly, 4 lakhs from Aligarh, 63.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16.40 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.90 lakhs from Panipat, 1.05 crores from Calcutta, 3.05 lakhs from Guwahati, 29.20 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.50 lakhs from Amravati, 2.20 lakhs from Akola, 30 lakhs from Indore, 2.30 lakhs (gross) from Ajmer, 3.60 lakhs from Bikaner, 28.70 lakhs from Jaipur, 1 crore from Hyderabad and 5.70 lakhs from Aurangabad. During the week, the Amitabh, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer managed a fairly decent 23.85 crores from India and another reasonable week may see it sail through to safety, especially in Bombay and parts of South. Unfortunately, SARKAR RAJ crashed heavily in the Overseas (around 70-72 percent) during the second weekend. The film grossed $833,005 in the US and $605,289 in the UK. Given the fact that EROS International has procured the rights for 7-8 crores, even recovery looks difficult.

Box Office Status: Flop in Overseas and might reach Below Average in India

Aamir

While Rajeev Khandelwal’s big screen debut, AAMIR, got him huge critical acclaim, the collections did not reflect that. The film collected 40 lakhs from Bombay, 3.80 lakhs from Ahmdedabad, 14 lakhs from Delhi, 4.05 lakhs from Noida, 2.25 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.05 lakhs from Nagpur and 3 lakhs from Hyderabad. During its opening week, AAMIR has netted a below par 1.25 crores from India and it has to show some improvement in the second week, to impress commercially.

Box Office Status: Might be a Flop

Woodstock Villa

Sikandar Kher’s first release, WOODSTOCK VILLA, faced a steep decline in its second week, after a very ordinary first one. It collected 1.50 lakhs from Bombay, 2.25 lakhs from Delhi, 1 lakh each from Ahmedabad, Ghaziabad and Agra and 1.25 lakh from Gurgaon. In its second week, WOODSTOCK VILLA managed a paltry 25 lakhs and it means that it has so far netted a poor 2.50 crores from India. The film has flopped at the box-office.

Box Office Status: Flop

Jaanat

Vishesh Films’ Kunal Deshmukh directed, Emraan-Sonal starrer, JANNAT, continued its heavenly run, though now on the lower side. During the week, JANNAT collected 13 lakhs from Bombay, 11 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.35 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.05 lakhs from Jamnagar, 14.50 lakhs from Delhi, 2 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 5 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.35 lakhs from Agra, 1 lakh (approx) each from Aligarh, Moradabad and Faridabad, 3 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4.15 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.10 lakh from Indore, 1.20 lakhs from Bhopal, 5.30 lakhs from Jaipur, 1.25 lakhs from Ajmer, 8.20 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.50 lakhs from Aurangabad. Adding another 2 crores, JANNAT crosses TASHAN and has so far netted an impressive 32 crores (for its price) in five weeks from India. JANNAT is the year’s biggest success and a genuine super-hit. The film has also done decently in the UK, grossing $302, 34.

Box Office Status: Super Hit in India & Semi-Hit in Overseas

Bhootnath

Ravi Chopra’s Amitabh, Juhi, Aman and Shah Rukh (special appearance) starrer, BHOOTHNATH, is on its last legs. During week, the film collected 2.60 lakhs from Bombay, 1.15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4 lakhs from Delhi, 1 lakh from Noida, 2 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.05 lakh from Gurgaon and 2 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding a further 40 lakhs in its fifth week, BHOOTHNATH has so far netted a quite satisfactory 25.50 crores from India. BHOOTHNATH is now an above average fare in India. The film has however fared below par in the Overseas.

Box Office Status: Above Average in India & Flop in Overseas
