Director Anurag Basu (Gangster, Murder and Metro) is not known for making controversial statements, so one has to wonder what provoked him to say uncomplimentary things about of B-Town’s biggest superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Excerpts from Anurag Basu’s Stardust interview, ad verbatim, “Sometimes, people ask me who is the actor I would like to work with; and everybody expects Amitji’s name as my reply. I have been a huge fan of Amitji; the reason why I am a part of Bollywood. I’ve grown up watching his films.” He further adds, “I think the whole magic of Amitji has gone now. I think he should gracefully retire.
According to me, he has become a little mechanical since quite some time. There are many films which I wonder why he did. I understand that a man of his stature must have had his own reasons for doing such films but I still prefer to watch Kaala Patthar, Majboor and his other brillant films a hundred times than watching Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. I am scared of watching any of his forthcoming films because I don’t want to degrade his image that I’ve carried in my mind for so many years.”
Here’s what Amitabh Bachchan had to say in reply to Anurag Basu’s comments: “I took no one’s advice when I wanted to enter the film industry and shall take no one’s advice, as to when I should leave it! After the release of Laawaris in the late ’70s-early ’80s I think, a queen of film journalism, may God rest her soul in peace, had loudly proclaimed that ‘The sun of Amitabh Bachchan has begun to set.’
In the mid ’80s to the ’90s, a prominent national weekly did a cover on me titled ‘Finished!’ Around 2000, a prominent and acclaimed filmmaker declared, much like Mr Anurag Basu, that it was time to put the last nail in the coffin of Mr Bachchan and give him a decent burial.
The honorable lady journalist has since passed away, the weekly has shut down and the acclaimed maker has stopped directing! I hope and pray that similar fate does not engulf Mr Anurag Basu, for my colleagues inform me that he is a director of great talent and promise!”

I think that most of the comments over here are unfair. Sentiments and emotions are running high. Everyone seems to be having a go at Big B (or even Anurag, for that matter) just on the basis of whether they personally like him or not. Facts are simply being over looked.
The fact of the matter is that it can’t be denied that over the past few years Big B has done some pathetic movies (RGV’s Aag and Boom being the most mentionable). But similarly it can’t be denied that this year’s BEST ACTOR CRITICS’ AWARD has gone to Big B for Cheeni Kum (Star Screen Awards).
I won’t be going into the argument concerning the authenticity of these awards, but would just like to remind that he was nominated for the best actor award by each and evevry awards’ group (even those close to Shahrukh’s camp).
Again you may like or hate the movie ‘Black’, but no one can deny that Big B’s performance in it was arguably his career best.
And lastly if we just forget this whole argument for a moment, one is left wondering that what came into Anurag that he suddenly turned so hostile towards such a
senior member and a living legend of our filming industry… Smelling fishy..ain’t it ??
I somewhat agree with what Anurag Basu has said. I have great respect for Mr Bachchan and appreciate his work. I think over the years Mr Bachchan has tried every kind of role, so by now he has done almost everything. May be that is the reason why he is trying things like Nishabd, Cheeni kum and RVG ki Aag. He wants to try what he as never done before and he has nothing at stake.
We are not used to see him doing petty roles and may be that is the reason why people think that he should gracefully retire. He is an old my now(at least by the number of candles on his cake) and has a legacy behind, its time that Mr Bachchan should rest now.

Go back to basics and respect who deserves respect.If you don’t want to watch his movies well go home and sit but then there are millions and millions out not only in India but worldwide who wants to watch him.So atleast respect their feelings.
Anurag Basu,the guy who came into lime light due to skin show would be not even remember five six years down the line and may be you would find him selling tickets of Mr Bachchan in black outsite a theatre.
I guess Anurag was spot on, but perhaps he should not have stated that so blatantly. After all its really the choice of Amitabh to continue or step down. If he feels like, he should really act as long as he wants to, the producers and directors want him to, irrespective of the quality of his acting and the films. To me Amitabh is really stereotyped, with loads of overacting (he always overacted, but I liked his overacting in deewar, shakti, silsila…). But still choice is his. As far as choices of viewers like me, simply ignore his of-late films like RGV-ki-Aag.
During early 90’s when Amitabh was doing pathetic movies like Toofan, Ajooba, Insaniyat, Jaadugar the whole industry was whispering that Amitabh should retire and he eventually had to retire in 1992. So, its not a big deal, most of them are still his fans and would prefer him to stay with respect instead of doing 2nd, 3rd, 4th leads.
Lemme give a example. If you take a poll in Bollywood and ask if Dilip Kumar should do 10 films in a year that of a father, servant, 4th lead, 5th lead in films by 20-something directors or relax at home as his career and prestige is something this young film makers won’t understand it. Surely, more than half the industry would prefer him to stay at home King size than doing such lame roles. They’ll say that as they love and respect Dilip Kumar.
Similarly, Anurag Basu saying this should be taken as some AB fan saying it and Anurag mentioned that he is a big Amitabh fan.
I think it is very late for big b to retire now.He should have retired fifteen years back to save his grace.But he has not done so because of which he has lost his crediblity as well as honour already.Some people say that he has given his career best performance in black and i also agree with that but lets count how many movies he has done in last ten years and what was their status.so it is not a big achievement on his part and even any ordinary actor can give such performance if he does about seventy films in ten years.

Hey I live both BIG B and SRk but the fact of the matter where i love to watch BIG B movies of 70’s I get irritated when even a BIG B ad comes up in the screen.I am not able to tolerate BIG B even for 10 seconds forget about a entire lenghth of a movie.
The problem wih BIG B fans is he is no doubt a supersatr in 70 s thru mid 80;s.But at this moment he doesnt even come under top 190.

Amir is doing hatkae films because he has no alternative apart from that.Look when started his career he also did romantic films as well as action films but with the arrival of king khan he was forced to choose different kind of cinema.I fail to understand that why you people are so bias with king.Can amir do darr,devdas the remake of dalip kumar,don the remake of big b,can he create the same magic as was created by srk in ddlj.The answer is big no.Id has two main problems one being poor dialouge delivery and other height.Though he is a good actor but he can not become a super star.Now about Hrithik please do not compare him with king as he has a lot to prove yet.

Aamir is definitely a star.(he is one of my fav)But his highest grossed movie till date has collected only 62 cr.(TZP)He is not a superstar as yet.
Hritik definitely have it in him to succeed SRK.He is a superstar for sure.he would definitely be no.1 once SRK relinquish his poistion.At this moment Both SRK and HRitik are neck to neck as far as India is concerned.But in the overseas SRK breaks free and overtakes Hritik by miles.But i am sure his day of reckoning would come very soon.
Reg AK he is consistent for only one year and he has given enoromous no pf flops too.But definitely he is close third behind SRK and Hritik.

Listen Guys Amitabh is a living legend, and nobody can ever take his place. SRK does not even come close. He is young he is an ok actor who right now happens to be at the top. All He can do is kkkk kiran a couple of good moves , good connection with Yash raj camp and lots of luck….thats what did it for him. He does not have Amitabh’s “Class” and will never have it. You talk about millions of Big B fans ? Where are they ? Why is it that Big B’s movies open to empty hall. I hope you agree that either he has fans, or does not have them and if he has fans then they would show up to see his movies. Maybe you define a Big B fan as one who stays home and watches a SRK movie on DVD when a new Big B movie opens.

As SRK fans we dont want SRK to reach Amitabhs status .Because we kow hoe irritating Amitabh is at this momnet.We dont want SRK to irriatate us whe he is old for sure.
We want SRK to be more dignified than BIG B ,when he ages.

Amitabh has done 145 movies out of which 96 are flops and 13 are avg.
rest are hits.He has given ono solo ATBB.
As far as SRK he has done 48 movies out of which 25 are hits ,7 are avg and rest are flops.
Here i am not calculating the small guest appearances of both the ators like SHOOT out at Lokhandwala where BIG B s role was minimal and I SEE YOU where SRKs role was minimal.
