Irfan Khan & Natalie Portman in Mira Nair’s next!
Mira’s next Kosher Vegetarian stars Irrfan Khan and Natalie Portman

Kosher Vegetarian . That’s the title of Mira Nair’s love story between a Gujarati man and Jewish girl. After playing the Bengali gentleman to perfection in The Namesake, Irrfan Khan now takes on the role of a Gujarati.
“But no accent this time,” laughs Irrfan from Santa Monica in California after attending the Spirit awards on Saturday night. “I’ll be playing this strictly-vegetarian Gujarati man. Unlike The Namesake, which was a family story, Kosher Vegetarian is the story of a man and a woman.
Natalie Portman is my co-star, but I find the project exciting because it’s Mira’s film. I love her spirit. I’m sure we’re going to do something special again.”
Awarding night
Though Irrfan lost the Best Supporting Actor award, he came away feeling extremely triumphant. “The event took place on a beach. It was amazing. There was no feeling of regret at all about not winning. Our film is a winner.”
Admiration society
At the event, Irrfan also spent a lot of time with Tamara Jenkins, the director of the much-applauded The Savages. “She seems to admire my work,” says Irrfan.
He also rubbed shoulders with Dustin Hoffman, Forest Whitaker, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Philip Hoffman Seymour. “Dustin Hoffman sat in the next row right in front of me. But I couldn’t introduce myself. How do you approach actors whom you’ve admired half your life?” asks the intense actor.
