Movie Review: WELCOME by FENIL SETA

welcome.jpg This year, majority of super-hits of this year were comedies (Bheja Fry, Partner, Heyy Babyy, Dhamaal, Bhool Bhulaiyaa). And now one more movie is added in the list hit comedy of 2007-Welcome!! Welcome, without a shred of doubt, is one of the finest entertainers of 2007! There is no story, no logic but the jokes and the situations in the movie are quite comic and funny and that’s what makes Welcome thoroughly enjoyable.

The story of the movie: Dr Ghungroo Patel (Paresh Rawal) is in search of a girl for Rajiv (Akshay Kumar). However, he wants the girl from a very nice family who don’t even have remote connections with underworld, and bhais and mawalis. On the other hand, Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) was in search of a guy for his sister Sanjana (Katrina Kaif). He sets his eye on Rajiv. But the problem is-Uday Shetty is a DON! To add to it, Sanjana and Rajiv fall in love with each other. What follow is misunderstandings, confusion and lots of comic situations. To add to the fun is lots of funny characters like Majnoo Bhai (Anil Kapoor), RDX (Feroz Khan), his stupid son Lucky and Ishika (Mallika Sherawat).

Welcome succeeds in each and every way. Everything in the movie is excellent and perfect-right from introduction of characters, proceeding of the story, creation of confusion etc-everything rocks. And the wonderful part-each of the character is wonderfully sketched (esp Anil and Nana). Each character in the movie is distinct and unique.

The humour in the movie starts from the first scene itself, which continues right till the climax. The first half rocks, with no dull moments. However, the film falls a bit in the second half. However, the movie picks up again in the last 30 minutes. These last 30 minutes were excellent-the comedy just doesn’t stop and there is a possibility that you may fall off from your seats. The climax had a striking resemblance to that of Bhagam Bhag, but it is better than Bhagam Bhag!!

However, there are some flaws in the movie. To begin with, the movie has lots of loopholes. Secondly, Paresh Rawal in the movie had a neck problem-his neck used to turn to the right automatically. But this happened hardly in the movie.

There are so many actors in the movie but the actors which was outstanding has to be Anil Kapoor, who played the role of Majnoo Bhai! After Crime Master Gogo, Aslam Bhai, Yeda Anna and Chota Don, here comes another funny Bhai-Majnoo!! Right from his entry, he keeps the viewer entertained. What made his performance great was his character, which was brilliantly written. Excellent work! One advice to Anil-stop doing roles which you did in Salaam-E-Ishq, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye etc; just concentrate on comedies now!

Nana Patekar was the next best after Anil. Nana gets a role which he has never ever done and he does it brilliantly. He was excellent in the horse-riding scene. Superb!

Akshay Kumar gets a different type of role but he essays it perfectly and gets totally into the skin of the character. Though the role of his resembled the one he did in Jaan-E-Mann, you feel much difference between the two roles.

Feroz Khan’s entry was dynamic and was great! The guy who played his son has also done a great job. Katrina Kaif hardly had anything to do except in the songs and in two scenes of the movie. Mallika Sherawat’s entry was great but that was the only thing impactful. After that, she was okay.

Paresh Rawal succeeds in tickling the funny bone. He was excellent in the last part of the movie. Supriya Karnik was okay. Vijay Raaz gets good scope in the 2nd half. Mushtaq Khan was funny. Others were good.

Welcome has three music directors-Sajid-Wajid, Anand Raaj Anand and Himesh Reshamiyya. All the three have done a great job. The songs which rock are the title track, ‘Uncha Lamba’, ‘Tera Sarafa’ and ‘Insha Allah’. Rest of the songs was unnecessarily placed.

Sajid-Wajid’s background music was perfect and suited the mood of the movie. Sanjay F Gupta’s cinematography was flawless. Action played a major role, especially in the climax.

Anees Bazmee, Praful Parikh and Rajiv Kaul have written the story, dialogues and screenplay. All the three have done an exceptionally great job. Because of their efforts, the movie becomes highly engrossing, interesting and funny. Special mention should be made of Anees Bazmee who directed the movie. Anees Bazmee had done an outstanding job by directing No Entry. Though he doesn’t come up with a movie like No Entry, he has done overall a great job! Well Done and Best Of Luck for your Future!

Some of the best scenes:
1. Entry of Paresh Rawal, Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor and also Feroz Khan
2. The scene where Akshay meets Katrina for the first time
3. Katrina and Akshay Kumar’s April Fool Pranks
4. The intermission point
5. The song ‘Insha Allah’ and the title track
6. The Horserace sequence
7. The last 30 mins of the movie

On the whole, Welcome is a thorough entertainer. It entertains fully and is extremely paisa vasool! Go for it!!

My rating- **** out of 5
