THE NAME PLAN

Numerology expert Sanjay Jumaani has changed the name as well as release date of Hanuman Returns. However, the film’s director Anurag Kashyap is upset about it

Anurag Kashyap’s animated film Hanuman Returns was suddenly renamed The Return of Hanuman just a few days before the film’s release. The film’s producer, Shailendra Singh of Percept Picture Company approached well-known numerologist Sanjay Jumaani to give the film a title based on numerology. Not only does the film have a new title but also a new release date as per Jumaani’s advice. The Return of Hanuman is a sequel to the animated film Hanuman.

However, this sudden change in the film’s title and release date hasn’t gone down well with the film’s director, Anurag Kashyap.

According to Jumaani, the new title is accurate according to numerology. Jumani said, “I had changed the earlier film’s title from Hanumanji to Hanuman when it was under production and the film did well. However, Shailendra approached me a little late this time as the film is almost due for release. I have changed it from Hanuman Returns to The Return of Hanuman. But this title has been changed very late. If the film had gone with the title The Return of Hanuman when it went on the floors, it would have helped even more. Although it’s very late, I’m hoping that the film does well.”

When contacted, Shailendra Singh from Percept said, “We’re not fanatically crazy about numerology or blindly depend on it. But when the first Hanuman was being made, Sanjay called my office and suggested that if we call it Hanuman instead of Hanumanji it would be great. And I was nervous as it was my first animated film. Thankfully, it did extremely well! So this time as well, a few days ago, he suggested that if we changed the title to The Return of Hanuman it would do wonders for the film.”

Changing the name at this point of time wasn’t an easy decision as all the publicity material of the film was designed and put on display a few weeks back.

“All the print materials, hoardings and other publicity material had already been displayed but we decided to change it anyway. The title change has cost us more than Rs 1.5 crore and we’ve lost five days of production time,” added Singh.

Speaking about the change in release date, Shailendra said, “We were releasing our film on December 28. However, Jumaani also suggested that we release it on December 27. So we’re having paid previews of The Return of Hanuman on December 27, which is a Thursday. At least I know mentally that my film released on a day with the right numerological vibrations. It’s about being safe than sorry.”

While Singh is more than satisfied that his film will release on a good note, sources close to director Anurag Kashyap say that he isn’t happy with the new title.

However, Anurag Kashyap refused to comment. “Please ask Shailendra Singh about the change in the film’s title,” he said.
