Short films in vogue, B’wood goes H’wood way

After Dus Kahaniyaan more of these short film formats are coming to Bollywood.

SHORT AND SWEET: After Dus Kahaniyaan more of these short film formats are coming to Bollywood.

If you watch Hollywood films, you probably know that films in a film like Paris J’etaime and Eros are a popular format there. However, after Dus Kahaniyaan more of these short film formats are coming to Bollywood.

With ten short stories in one film Dus Kahaniyan producer, Sanjay Gupta is all set to make another ten short films with directors like Apurva Lakhia and Meghna Gulzar. The box-office response to the first Dus Kahaniyaan doesn’t seem to matter.

“I will make Dus Aur Kahaniyan, if all goes well. This one will have stories from India like Ishmat Chugtai and Manto,” says Sanjay Gupta, Producer.

He is not the only one who is hooked on to short films. It’s a format that more and more Indian filmmakers are trying out. Ace filmmaker, Vishal Bharadwaj alongwith Santosh Sivan, Farhan Akhtar and Mira Nair has made AIDS Jaago, which has four short stories with Indian actors about AIDS. Actors like Sidharth, Irffan Khan, Prabhudeva and Sameera Reddy are also part of the film.

Down South there is Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Nalla Pennagal, which has four short films about four women which reflect influences from his own life. Both the films have won accolades in the festival circuit.

“I think the more entertaining the film, the more people will remember the message. It should not come across like the social message,” says Vishal Bharadwaj.

“There have been different reactions from all women about Naal pennugal and everyone seems to be loving it,” says Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

But the flip side remains that these films have not worked at the box office. Ram Gopal Verma’s spooky series of Darna Mana Hai and Darna Zaroori hai carried big Bollywood names, yet did not manage to do wonders. And now Dus Kahaniyan faces the same fate. Yet, films like Mumbai 10 from Sahara Motion Pictures and Dus Aur Kahaniya are eagerly lapped up as a challenge by filmmakers. Market economics not withstanding, short and sweet films seem to be the order of the day.
