Approx. 35 cr and 20 cr Nett Gross in India for OSO and Saawariya respectively: Business-Standard

Sony may fail to recover money from Saawariya
Bs Reporter / Mumbai November 16, 2007

The verdict on Saawariya and Om Shanti Om, which hit the screens during Diwali is clear. According to industry estimates, the first week domestic box office collections for Om Shanti Om would be around Rs 35 crore, thus covering the cost of the movie, while Saawariya would just about manage Rs 20 crore - less than half of what Sony Pictures spent on making the movie (Rs 45 crore).

Shah Rukh Khan-promoted production company Red Chillies Entertainment is, of course, laughing all the way to the bank. It sold the the worldwide distribution rights of Om Shanti Om, starring Shah Rukh Khan and debutant Deepika Padukone, to Eros International for a whopping Rs 74 crore.

The film was made with a budget of Rs 35 crore. Khan recovered the cost of the movie and earned a profit prior to the release.

However, the big question is whether distributor Eros International would be able recover costs. The trade body says that it will.

According to film analyst Komal Nahata, Eros will earn Rs 25 crore as a distributer in the first week from domestic and overseas box office collections. Also, Shah Rukh Khan’s movies do well for a longer number of weeks and they would be able to recover the money.

However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Saawariya, is headed for trouble.

“Sony Pictures will not recover the cost of production, while Eros International will certainly recover and earn profits,” said Nahata.

He said that Sony Pictures, which chose not to sell its distribution rights and dealt with multiplex owners directly, will earn around Rs 12 crore in the first week from domestic and overseas box office collections.

The trend is reflected in the earnings of key exhibitors. Multiplex group Inox Leisure earned Rs 2.25 crore in the first three days from Om Shanti Om, while Saawariya earned Inox Rs 1.5 crore.

This poor showing has made an impact on the number of shows for Saawariya, starting week two.

Devang Sampat, vice-president - marketing and programming, Cinemax India, said, “We will reduce the number shows for Saawariya in week two because of a drop in occupancy. Om Shanti Om has had a much better run”.

PVR Cinemas will follow suit. Asish Saxena, COO-film cells, PVR Cinemas said that the theatre chain will reduce the number of shows for Saawariya, as occupancy was around 59 per cent and earning around Rs 1.48 crore in the first week, while Om Shanti Om’s occupancy was 90 per cent and brought in around Rs 2.14 crore.

  3. where are the results??????

  4. well i believe the above numbers are lees.It has certainly did more than 40 CR in first week.

  5. where are the results???????

  6. Kamran,

    The exact link will be
    http://www.boxofficeindia.com/osofirstweek.htm

This is only preliminary result….. but accurate.

Final results will be out on tuesday/wednesday.

  7. Om Shanti Om Has done record breaking collections in its first week. Its business is around 41 crore nett from 850+ cinemas.
Its run steady in its second week with 440+ screen which similar to first week. The second week collection should be estimated to 25+ crore which makes the film “biggest blockbuster of the year”…..

If the collection should not be fallen after two weeks than Om shanti Om has a chance to Cross the gross nett of biggies like
    (1) Lage Raho Munnabhai- 69.9 crore
    (2) Gadar-ek prem katha- 70.0 crore
    (3) Dhoom:2- 85.4 crore

At the end the 35 crores Om Shanti Om has Recover its cost Only in six days of its realease…..
Now its party time for SRK and Farah..

  8. it would definitely break LRMB and Gadar. It is to be seen if it beats D2 or not.

  9. Rajeev,

OSO total nett collection from India will definitely cross Gadar’s 70 crores, may be less than 3 weeks time.

What I am saying is, it has to be seen whether it can cross Gadar’s Adjusted nett figure of 94,23,00,000 due to inflation in today’s time, not actual nett of 70,00,00,000 in 2001 from India.

It will definitely cross DHOOM2 nett figure of 85,48,00,000 in 2006 from India, since there is not much difference in price rise from 2006 to 2007.

  10. Om Shanti Om has simply seen an incredible first week at the box office. It has set new first week highs in every circuit of India and never have we seen so many theatre and city records broken by a single film.

The first week circuit nett billings are just huge as Mumbai crosses the 16 crore mark, Delhi/UP has touches 7.50 crore and East Punjab is around 3 crore. The all first week all India business is around the 41 crore mark.

The film has gone into second week with all its theatres in play. Shockingly the biggest of films loses digital screens in second week but Om Shanti Om goes into week 2 with 440 digital/UFO screens which is the same as first week.

Om Shanti Om has also make a record. It has collected about 30+ crores in the overseas territory in its 1st weekend.

On the other hand, Saawariya had a great weekend but collections fell badly from Monday onwards but due to a good three first days the film has managed to get to around 20 crore over the week but it looks very doubtful that the film will recovery costs.

The way collections have begun in the second week the film will struggle to do 30 crore nett business and will be a losing fare. It has done its best business in the Mumbai circuit.

Sawwariya has also struggled in overseas in compare to OSO. It has collected about 4.5+ crores in the overseas territory in its 1st weekend.

The second week will also see the OM Shanti Om smashing records & Saawariya will be seen to fall down. I think OSO will collect neet 57+ crores (32+ crores in India & 25+ crores in overseas)& Saawariya will collect neet 9+ crores (8+ crores in India & 1.5+ crores in overseas).

  11. Yeah Kaoushik,

    I agree with you.

I would be very happy if it crosses 100 crore nett.

  12. Folks, some people are still naive/foolish enough to say that OSO is more of a naach-gaana sort of film (though i beg to differ and would categorize it as a entertainer)…… In spite of what i think, if you look at OSO purely the way those naach-gaana categorizing people look at it, i would say SRK has clearly done an even more commendable job - MAKING SUCH A ‘NON-INTELLIGENT’, ‘NAACH-GAANA’ (as some people are trying to categorize OSO) SORT OF MOVIE THIS MASSIVE A HIT IS A TREMENDOUSLY COMMENDABLE JOB WHICH SRK HAS CARRIED ON HIS SHOULDERS BRILLIANTLY. HE HAS DONE THAT IN SPITE OF THERE BEING A ‘INTELLIGENT’, ‘ARTY’ MOVIE CALLED SAAWARIYA (this is how those naach-gaana categorizers would categorize Saawariya though here again i beg to difer) WHICH WAS RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME WITH A MUCH BIGGER MARKETING AMMO……
GIVEN ALL THAT SRK TRULY, HAS SHOWN WHO IS THE KING OF BOLLYWOOD………

  13. ALI KHAN: As ‘Mate’ has said, we’ve replied enough to your BS…… Don’t test our patience by posting the same sort of negative post all over this blog. Especially such senseless stuff. If you have some specific points that you think could’ve been directorially better, you can put them down. But don’t just keep harping about things on the periphery……

  14. OSO unfortunately has not beaten Gadar, and it grossed more than 130 CR. overseas and in India.
