| Blacked Out: Aamir Khan |
After his stint as an activist for the Narmada Bachao Andolan, it seems Aamir Khan has once again landed in a soup with political parties. This time though, it’s for no fault of his.
On August 16, Khan attended an event for Toyota Innova (he is the brand ambassador) in Indore.
The next day, when he was returning to Mumbai, 20 Congress party workers accosted him at the airport for allegedly dishonouring the national flag!
Flying high
Apparently, the Indian national flag had been hoisted at the gates of Rajpal Motors showroom in Indore, where the event was held.
The Congress party workers have taken offence to the fact that the flags were allowed to fly even post sundown, violating the Indian Penal Code.
According to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act (1971) of the IPC, the national flag cannot continue to fly post sundown.
Indore Youth Congress President Devendra Singh says, “Aamir Khan came to attend an event at Rajpal Motors on the night on August 16. Our flag continued to fly at the showroom’s gates till 11 pm, even though the Constitution states that it cannot fly post sunset.
This is an insult to national honour. Aamir was present there but didn’t say anything. So as a protest, 20 Youth Congress workers went to the airport the next day with black flags and waved them in front of him. Aamir didn’t say anything, but we were arrested.”
Singh adds that the Youth Congress even registered an FIR against the showroom’s owner Rakesh Rajpal on August 17. He says, “We want a case registered against Aamir Khan too, as he was present there.
We have a video of the entire event and will register a complaint against him in court, if necessary.”
Isn’t that unnecessarily harsh? After all, it’s possible Aamir wasn’t aware of the violation. But Singh says, “May be Aamir does not know the laws of the land, but he is such a big star and needs to be more responsible.
Even children know the significance of the national flag and how not to disrespect it.”
But I’m patriotic
Both Aamir Khan and Rakesh Rajpal were unavailable for comment.
However, Indore-based distributor Aditya Choksi says, “Aamir would never knowingly insult the national flag. He is extremely patriotic and has always stood for the rights of the individual.”
