Bollywood Box-Office Report of the week

KAAFILA, CHAKDE! INDIA & BLUE UMBRELLA
Next Friday will see Amitoj Mann’s Sunny Deol starrer, KAAFILA, along with Yash Raj’s Shimit Amin directed, Shah Rukh Khan starrer, CHAKDE! INDIA. Given the nature of both the releases, the makers have done the the right thing in adopting the appropriate release strategy. While KAAFILA is going more for single screens and some mass oriented multiplexes, CHAKDE! INDIA is concentrating on high ticket multiplexes/cineplexes and select city based single screens. Chances are that KAAFILA, with its global theme of illegal immigration, will do well in North (specially East Punjab) and Central India, CHAKDE! INDIA may get good returns from metros and big cities. The point not to be missed is that both Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan are portraying characters that are against their image. While Sunny Deol is playing a Pakistani, Shah Rukh Khan is essaying the role of an unglamorous hockey coach!
Did we forget Vishal Bhardwaj’s BLUE UMBRELLA ? No we did not. Unfortunately, just like the brilliant GANDHI MY FATHER, the extremely well made BLUE UMBRELLA has little or no chances of a commercial success.
CASH
Anubhav Sinha’s CASH, got bad reviews from the first day itself, and in fact there was false reporting about its opening day being poor and in the range of 50 to 70 percent! However, as per reputed trade journals, CASH, which released at Regal, Eros and 82 other cinemas of Bombay, had a very good opening. Outside of Bombay, the opening was very good at many places but not upto the mark in smaller circuits like C.I. , and the first week numbers, will reveal the truth. In the UK, CASH broke into the UK top 10 with $111,224.
Box Office Status: Aawited.
GANDHI MY FATHER
Anil Kapoor’s Feroz Abbas Khan directed, Akshaye Khanna starrer, GANDHI MY FATHER, had a poor start in Bombay and the opening was pathetic almost everywhere. A great performance by Akshaye Khanna is wasted again as GANDHI MY FATHER is certain to fail at the ticket window. In the Overseas, GANDHI MY FATHER, impressed in the US with $174,425, while dissapointing in the UK with $90,271.
Box Office Status: Flop.
PARTNER
Meanwhile David Dhawan’s Govinda, Salman, Lara and Katrina starrer PARTNER, continued to rock at the box-office, even in the second week. The collections were extremely stable, both at the ‘A’ centres as well as mass oriented ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres. Checking out the actual numbers, PARTNER collected 3.56 crores from Bombay, 87 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.15 lakhs from Valsad, 4.35 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 10.20 lakhs from Rajkot, 4.57 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.90 lakhs from Junagarh, 5 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.40 lakhs from Adipur, 3.60 lakhs from Solapur, 7.70 lakhs from Nasik, 1.95 crores from Delhi city, 28.70 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16.20 lakhs from Faridabad, 23.30 lakhs from Noida, 14.30 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 6.15 lakhs from Agra, 7.40 lakhs from Varanasi, 2 lakhs from Allahabad, 2.95 lakhs from Bareilly, 4 lakhs from Aligarh, 21.20 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.15 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.90 lakhs from Amravati, 2.60 lakhs from Akola, 5.20 lakhs from Raipur, 2.70 lakhs from Bhilai, 1.25 lakhs from Rajnandgaon, 2.65 lakhs from Chandrapur, 20.20 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Sehore, 3 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.50 lakhs from Ujjain, 45.40 lakhs from Jaipur, 7.50 lakhs from Ajmer, 2 lakhs from Bikaner, 55 lakhs from Calcutta, 3 lakhs from Guwahati, 61 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5.40 lakhs from Aurangabad. The week saw PARTNER adding another 18.50 crores for an amazing all-India total of 48.50 crores in just two weeks. The movie powers its way into the hit plus category and is definite to get to superhit status. Despite a big fall in the Overeas, during the third weekend, PARTNER achieves a hit status. It has so far collected $1,481,934 in UK and $1,030,375 in the US.
Box Office Status: Hit Plus in India & Super Hit in UK.
NAQAAB
Tips Films’ Abbas-Mustan directed, NAQAAB, continued its downslide in the third week, as the collections show. The movie collected 9 lakhs from Bombay, 6 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1 lakh each from Rajkot and Bhavnagar, 2.75 lakhs from Delhi city, 1 lakh from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Indore, 2.50 lakhs from Calcutta and 1 lakh from Aurangabad. During the week, NAQAAB managed to collect around 60 lakhs, for an all-India total of nearly 15.10 crores in three weeks. Unfortunately, it still remains in the flop category. NAQAAB has also failed in the Overeas. Just for records, it has collected an ordinary $344,697 in UK.
Box Office Status: Flop in India & Overseas.
APNE
Surprisingly, Anil Sharma’s Deol family starrer, APNE, showed fairly stable collections in the fifth week, as compared to the previous one (where it fell heavily due to the PARTNER onslaught). The movie collected 1.5 lakhs from Bombay, 2.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 8.90 lakhs from Delhi, 1.85 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.70 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.25 lakhs from Agra, 1.40 lakhs from Varanasi, 1 lakh from Meerut and 1.20 lakhs from Jaipur. In its fifth week, APNE collected around 70 lakhs for an all-India total of nearly 27 crores and the movies moves into the semi-hit to hit category. And that, in all probabilities, will be its final rating. APNE has already been declared a hit in UK, where it has collected $1,144,851.
Box Office Status: Semi-Hit in India & Hit in Overseas.
